VERSOIX, Switzerland UP— Prince Karim Aly Khan, a serious young student of Oriental history at Harvard University, assumed his duties today as the first atomage leader of more than 10 million Ismaili Moslems. The handsome, 20-year-old prince, who now will be known as Aga Khan IV, was the surprise choice of his grandfather, the late Aga Khan, to serve as his successor as head of the sect. The Aga Khan, who died Thursday at the age of 79. provided in his will that Karim he named Iman leader of the Shiah Muslim Ismaili community. The announcement Friday night came as a surprise.
