French Reject US Request For Spies
PARIS (UP)—A French gov-f ernmert official said today that F rance world not extradite a former American Army officer and his wife accused of spying for Russia unless the United States can prove they were criminals. The couple is Russian-born George Zlatovski, 47. a former U. S. Army intelligence officer, and his wufe, Jane Foster, 45. w r ho have lived in Paris since 1949. Tney were indicted earlier this week by a New York federal grand jury on charges of espionage for the Soviet Union. ij But it seerrwd more and more doubtful they ever would be sent back to New York to face trial. The U. S. government thus far has not made any formal request for extradition of the pair. Reli j able sources here said the French government has politely but firmly turned down several unofficial requests lor extradition, insisting a formal request is necessary. But there was some doubt whether Washington ever would make a formal request. This was because the United States virtually would have to try its case against the Zlatovski in a French court, and it is highly reluctant to divulge its evidence abroad. The biggest problem the j Americans face in the chess game | that has developed in the legal fight to send the Zlatovskis to trial is that espionage often is viewed as a political and not a criminal affair. France will not extradite anyone on political charges. This
