Museum, wdiich said the fossil i was found in shale formations in j neighboring Parke County, sev-
eral weeks ago.
The museum said the fossil, uncovered by Drs. Rainer Zangerl ; and Eugene S. Richardson Jr., is believed to be the first well preserved fossil shark ever found
from the Coal Age.
‘‘A most unusual feature of the discovery is the shark’s well- preserved skin shagreen,,” the museum said. "Very rarely is a cartilaginous skelton of a shark found, and fossilized skin, especially of a creature that lived as long ago as this shark, is an almost unheard-of find.” The remains of the shark measured 8V& feet in length, and would have been about 15 feet had they been complete, the mu-
seum said.
Zangerl and Richardson found the skin, verebral column, fins and skull. The third quarters had been carried away by erosion. The two scientists said the exceptionally well preserved condition of the skelton may be attributed to the fact that the shark was buried in mud almost immediately after its death. The fossil remains of other sharks found near the skelton indicated that several of the animals were trapped in some way before they died. The museum would not say on whose property the fossil remains were found. Spokesmen said the museum agreement with the farmer who owns the land specified that the site not bo made public, because of the landowner’s fear that sightseers would overrun the property. Exploratory diggings in the shale formations of the county have been conducted over a period of several years, as scientists decided the shale was of the type which should contain
fossils.
A portion of the shark skelton became exposed in a hillside excavation and the scientists fol-
