Corn Planting Only 1/5 Done LAFAYETTE (UP) — Farm experts said today that only onefiith of Inidana’s corn crop had been planted by last weekend. Robert E. Straszheim, agricultural statistician at Purdue University, said 20 per cent of corn planting was completed, compared with 68 per cent a year ago, and 8 per cent of soybeans , planted, compared with 39 per cent a year ago. Heavy and steady rain and f flooding streams were respon- j sible for the fact field work was running 12 days behind normal, Straszheim said. "Farm work was further ham; ■ pered by continued rain and j many streams were at flood I stage in central and southern j counties,” the weekly crop report said. "Surplus moisture is reported in 87 per cent of the counties, with ample reported in the remaining 13 per cent. “Field work was possible only 9 per cent of the time. Some corn was planted at the close of the week in scattered northern areas with favorable drainage. “The first cutting of alfalfa has started but weather has been unfavorable for drying and some fields are being made into grass silage. "Tomato plant setting is 16 per cent complete. Rains have inter- | fered with fruit spraying but as a result rtf the rain pasture con- | ditions remain at high level.”
Wins Right To Teach Daughter CALIFORNIA, Mo. (UP)—A former music teacher who charged that public schools turn out ’’trained seals” won the right to tutor her 7-year-old daughter at home. Circuit Court Judge William M. Kimberlin of Harrisonville reversed a Magistrate Court ruling in the case of Mrs. Mary Schoenheit and held in effect that regular daily instruction at home is equivalent to that in the schools. Kimberlin said his opinion applied only to this particular case and only to the school year of 1956-57. Mrs. Schoenheit and her daughter moved from Pamona, Calif., last year to near Centertown, in central Missouri. They live in the California, Mo., school district and the school system brought the case when she failed to register her daughter, Mary. She spent two hours in jail for defying the magistrate judge’s order before St. Louis attorney Ward Driscoll took her case. Mrs. Schoenheit charged that public schools were “very harmful” for her “exceptionally talented daughter because they repress individual effort and stress conformity.”
IN MEMORY’ In loving memory of our Dad and Papaw, Johnie E. Ogles, who passed away May 30, 1955. Your gentlp face and patient smile, With sadness we recall. Y’ou had a kindly word for each, And died beloved by all. The voice is mute and stilled the heart. That loved us well and true. Ah, bitter was the trial to part From one so good as you. You are not forgotten loved one, Nor will you ever be; As long as life and memory last, We will remember thee. We miss you now, our hearts are sore. As time goes by we miss you more. Your loving smile, your gentle face, No one can fill your vacant place. Sadly missed by Morris G., Helen and children. p.

West opened the deuce of hearts, and declarer finessed dummy’s jack. East took the king of hearts and returned a heart to dummy’s ace. Without giving the matter much thought. South went after the clubs. West refused the first two club tricks, and South woke up to his danger. He led the king and then the queen of diamonds. West refused these tricks also. The rest was easy for the defenders. West took the next ace that was offered to him and led a third heart to the queen. After much sweat and toil. South wound up with two tricks m each suit. This left him one trick short of his contract. ENTRIES SCARCE When the ace of hearts has been knocked out. South should realize that entries to dummy are very scarce. He must go after the diamonds first to make sure of getting three tricks in at leas* one suit. If South plays diamonds until the ace is forced out. he can win the third round of hearts and then go after the clubs. The defenders cannot stop him from getting to dummy, at which time he can cash the last diamond. The defenders can ta , ke two hearts and two aces, but South easily makes the rest.
