Sheinwcid on Bridge Foxy Play Fulfills Unmakable Contract By Alfred Sheinwold Mr. Fox had no chance to make his game contract. The opponents had two good clubs and two aces. It was North’s fault, of course, since his double raise was a clear overbid.

Opening lead—V 2
As it happened, however, Mr.
(Fox found a way to ^teal his con- , Jtract. West opened the deuce of ■‘.hearts, leading the lowest of three small cards, as many experts recommended. Dun^jny played low, and East finessed the lithe ten. East could have played It the ace of hearts and his top TELLS RED PLAN
clubs, but he could not tell that his partner had a trump trick. West might be leading from Q-x-x in which case the finesse of the ten would give East two heart tricks. Mr. Fox won the first trick uaLh the queen of hearts, but warstill not out of the woods. He saw a chance to discard his re-ma-ining heart on dummy’s fourth diamond, but he could hardly afford to lead out all the diamonds without drawing trumps. It was just as bad to draw trumps, for this would give the defenders the chance to take their four tricks. COMPROMISE PLAN Mr. Fox saw a compromise plan.. At the second trick, he led the ten of spades toward dummy. West played a low trump, hoping that South was planning to finesse. This would be a correct play if East held the queen of spade’, for then South might make the wrong guess. There was actually no guess in the trump suit. South’s ten of spades won. and now Mr. Fox ran the four diamonds. These all got by safely, and Mr. Fox was able to discard his losing heart. He could then draw trumps and claim his contract. DAILY QUESTION Dealer, at your right, opens the bidding with one heart. You are next, holding: S—A Q 5 3 2 H A 5 3 D—10 6 3 C—8 7 What do you say? Answer: Pass. Avoid overcalling on a suit that has no body.” A spade bid at this point might go for a bad ride even if the opponents have no game.
