Sheinwold on Bridge Safety Play Needed To Assure Slam Contract By .Alfred Sheinwold Mr. Bull was very sad. Opening lead—4 7 Shameful was the right word, but luck had nothing to do with the matter. Mr. Bull won the first diamond trick and led a low club to dummy’s king. This was a shameful play, since it cost declarer his slam contract. West could sit back and wait to get two clubs tricks. Mr. Bull fretted and fumed, but he couldn’t find a way to make the four

club tricks he needed for his slam. There are several ways to make the slam, but all of them require more thought than Mr. Bull is willing to give to a hand. It is obvious that South can make four clubs tricks with perfect ease unless one opponent has all of the missing clubs. The only problem, therefore, is to guard against the worst possible club
break.
SIMPLEST PLAY The simplest play is to lead the ; jack of clubs from the South ! hand at the second trick. If West follows suit with a small club, dummy plays low. If it then turns out that West has all of the missing clubs, South can continue with the seven of clubs as a finesse against West's nine. West cannot afford to cover the jack or | the seven, for then dummy’s king will win the trick. If West fails to cover, South wins two clu tricks with low cards and still ha., the ace and king. The immediate lead of the c\ of clubs works equally well v “n if it develops that East ha.- :i! of the missing clubs. In thi f iso, West will discard on t first round of clubs. Dummy r i win with the king and retr i a club r or a finesse. Declai or g< s back to dummy with a heart raid takes another club fines ae through East, thus making sure of the
slam.
