Quarles has been describing the new development schedule in a series of appeartnces before congressional committees. His testimony has not yet been made public. Quarles has told one committee the Air Force has decided to "back up and take a new' hitch,” concentrating on materials and reactor designs rather than going all-out on a complete air-

As a i esult, he said, it now will be "a few years later” than once thought when the airplane flies. But it will be a useful combat plane rather than a “flying reactor,” according to Quarles. —P( A LOANS SET RECORD
