In planning this event heie, it was felt that the people of Greencastle and Putnam County should have a chance to see what their Scouting program was accomplishing in their own community. Mrs. Luca*, president, announced the County Federation meeting will be held April 9 at Clinton Falls Church. The registration will begin at 9:30 DST. Two good movies coming soon are "Boys' Town” and "Battle Hymn.” For the program Mrs. Northrop reviewed the book "Sir Walter Scott, His Ufe and Personality” by Hesketh Pearson. Scott was very proud of his ancestry. He was admit!ed to the bar in 1792. but after practicing a little, law did not appeal to him, and his attention was soon attracted to English, German. and Italian authors. He was first popular as a poet and later as a novelist. He wrote twenty-six “Waverly Novels." During the social hour the hostess served delectable refresnments. Club adjourned to meet April l7tk.
WASHINGTON. <UPi — Sen. Harry F. Byrd. D-Va. xeported today that the cost of meeting Uncle Sam’s payroll rose to an all-time record in January. Counting 17 million dollars paid to foreign nationals employed by the United States, he said, the federal payroll topped 1 billion dollars. Byrd’s statement was based on figures collected for his joint committee on reduction of federal expenditures. He said the government paid wages of 990 million dollars to the 2.387,015 civilians employed in January. Ike Returns At A Slower Speed WASHINGTON (UP)- President Eisenhower slowed down Sunday and critics of his highspeed auto trips cheered. The President drew caustic comments over the week end for his driver’s 70-miles-an-hour speeds en route to his Gettysburg, Pa., farm Friday. Sunday, Mr. Eisenhower, with his wife and mother-in-law along, motored back to the capital at a more leisurely speed. By-passing Rockville, Md.. near where newsmen were flagged down Friday for exceeding the speed limit trying to keep up wtih the President, the Chief Executive took a back-road route to the White House.

ELKHART, Ind., (UP) — The reckless homicide tiial of Frederick T. Gill, 30, Detroit, began today with a son of 1956 Democratic presidential nominee Adlai E. Stevenson expected to be one of the witnesses. John Fell Stevenson was the driver of a car w'hich collided with Gill’s truck on U. S. 20 near Middlebury in December, 1955. William C. Boyden, Lake Forest, 111., and William S. North III, Chicago, classmates of Stevenson at Harvard and passengers in his car, were killed in the accident. Gill was indicted by a grand jury on charges of involuntary manslaughter and reckless homi-
cide.

Rubber Workers Ouf On Strike
CINCINNATI, Ohio (UP) More than 13,000 United Rubbei Workers went on strike early today at nine B. F\ Goordich plants around the nation. The workers struck after negotiators failed to reach a new contract agreement by the deadline Sunday midnight. Negotiations had been under way here since March 11. Plants involved in the strike are in Akron and Marion, Ohio - Los Angeles; Miami, Ok’.a.; Tn--caloosa, Ala.; Oaks, Pa.; Riverside, N. J.; Clarksville, Tenn. and Cadillac, Mich. The disputes involve working conditions, welfare, fringe beneits, and a union demand for Tension of the company’s incentive
pay plan.
Wages were agreed upon ai meetings last July.

Mrs. Anita Carroll was found Sunday 10 miles from the ambush scene. An Iranian Air Force plane flew her white draped coffin back to Tehran Sunday night where the Shah paid his last tribute with a wreath of carnations. She had been shot with a shotgun and stabbed and her body was partially stripped of clothing. She apparently mirvived the ambush only to be slain later when the bandits discovered she had left a trail for the National Gendarmerie.

Steven was arrested in a biw station here Sunday, three days after escaping from a Michigan prison faar.. During his freedom, he stole two cars near Brigton, Mich., held up two gas stations and a clothing store in Toledo, Ohio, and broke into several other gas stations along L. f5. 24 in Indiana.
STURTEVANT, Wis. (UP) Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Galt Jr., Woodstock. 111., and their- niece, Cindy Davis, 4, passengers in an airplane, escaped injury when their craft collided in the air with another plane. The pilot of their plane, Robert Ellis. 51, Darien, Wis., also escaped injury, but the two nn n in the other plane wore hurt. Taken to St. Luke's Hospital at Racine, Wis., were Sylvester Holler, 34. the pilot .and William Jack Morgan. 35, the planes owner, both of Sturtevant. The crash occurred as Ellis was bringing his plane in for a landing and Holler was taking off at the Air Citv Field here Sunday. Each pilots said he did not see the other plane.
