Negroes Ignore Leaders' Advice
as required under the existing
law.
The .Miami Council of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People
Negro leaders in Miami advis- Tuesday night issued a state-
uncon-
federal judge
ed members of their race to sit where they please on city buses today but thousands of Negro riders on early morning runs took their umial places in the
rear.
City attorneys have conceded in Federal Court that the local
bus segregation law is
stitutional and
has ruled it illegal. But the city has asked dismissal of the ruling on a technical ground. Police and bus comp'mv officials reported that Negroe* apparently ignoring the advice of some of their leaders/ made no attempt to defy segregation customs during the early morn-
ing rush period.
Bus company officials instructed drivers to ask Negroes to move to the rear of bust.
rnent saying Negroes now have a legal right to board Miami buses as equals of whites. The city asked FederaJ Dis- ! trict Judge Kmett Choate to dismiss a suit attacking the segregation law, using at) one defense the technical ground that it has never been enforced by the city t itself.. The Miami Transit Co. followed with a statement saying the company must continue to enforce segregated seating tinder terms of its franchise “until | we fr^t official directives.” PUTNAM COUNTY LEAGUE

The House passed the bill by a sizeable margin. The measure inter pissed the Senate after a bitter fight. Sen. Francis Case, R-S D., threw the Senate into a turmoil shortly before the final vote by revealing that a lobbyist for an oil company had offered him a $2,500 campaign contribution. Mr. Eisenhow'er vetoed the measure with a blast at the "arrogant tactics” of the oil lobbyists. The Senate investigated the campaign offer and is still engaged in a general investiga- '. on of lobbying.
