Blackwood on Bridge Bl&m Lost By Bad Handling of Trumps Mr. Muzzy failed to ti ne his play of this slam correctly and went down one. Part of the blame for the minus score, however, must be charged to Mr. Champion. Technically, he had the Btrength to go to six hearts, especially after Mr. Muzzy's second bid of two no-trump v.hic. promised an above-minimum opening. But Mr. Champion knows that Mr. Muzzy will rebid two no-

trump in this situation on an absolute minimum—^provided his j partner bids the suit in which Mr. Muzzy has no high cards. Besides, there was the fact that Mr. Muzzy would be the one to play the hand. TOO LATE Mr. Masters led the king of spades amd Mr. Muzzy won with the ace and immediately cashed the ace and queen of trumps. He then cashed the ace and king of diamonds, returned to his hand with a trump and led the queen of diamonds, discarding dummy’s last spade. He ruffed a spade on the board. He still had a losing spade and the only way to return to his own
hand again was with a trumo. After making that play, he realized too late that if he nowruffed his last spade, he would have no trumps left in either hand and would be left in dummjto lead away- from the ace, queen, four in clubs. Desperately, he led the ten of clubs and let it ride. Mrs. Keen won with the jack and got out with the carefully saved ten of spades. This w-as ruffed on the board, but now Mrs. K-^en was bound to win another club trick. PARTNER’S REASONING As Mr. Champion pointed out, the hand could have been made as follows: Win the first spade and cash
. dummy's tw o top diamonds at ' ! once. Enter the closed hand with the ten of hearts, lead the queen ; of diamonds and discard dummy's last spade. Ruff a spade on , the board, come back with a trump and ruff the last spade. Now enter the closed hand once more with a trump, lead the ten of clubs and duck in dummy. Mrs. Keen wmuld win with the jack but would have no good return. After this line of play, both dummy and closed hand
