Mr. Abel failed miserably in

this respect in today’s game and Mr. Champion was left in the dark as to what suit to guard at the end. PARTNER CORRECTLY READ The opening lead was the five of clubs and Mr. Abel won with ; the ace and returned the deuce, i All right s>o far. Mr. Champion correctly read his partner for four clubs. Mr. Dale won the second trick | with the king of clubs. He entered dummy twice with the two high hearts and took spade fin- | esses both times. Then he laid I down the ace of spades, dropping |

Mr Abel s kirf> On iMV-las*- ffffc trick Mr. Champion discarded the nine of clubs. A heart was

frotif dmrnffy.

Now Mr. Dale ran all the rest of his spades. dHesrding from dummy the last heart, a small diamond and the jack of clubs in that order. Mr. Champion played the ten of hearts, the queen of clubs and was then down to the queen of hearts and three diamonds to the queen. What discard should he make on the last spade ? Did Mr. Dale have for his last three cards, the nark of hearts and the ace-king of diamonds? Or did he have no hearts and three diamonds to the

^ ace-king?

Mr. Champion had carefully ' wretched his partner's discards. 1 But Mr. Abel, who wa»s in a posi- ; ‘ion to make the correct defense | perfectly dear, fell down on the job. He stubbornly held on to the jack of hearts. WRONG GUESS Mr. Champion had to guess and he guessed wrong. On the ; last spade he dropped a small I diamond and Mr. Dale then took the rest in the diamond suit. "Why didn’t you give me a count by throwing away the jack of hearts?” Mr. Champion growl-

ed.

"But that was the biggest card | in my hand at the time,” Mr. Abel replied . "What a rea-oon,” snorted Mr. Champion. "I had Dale counted for six spades and two clubs. If 'you had thrown the jack of hearts, I would have known he had only two hearts and therefore three diamond^. Then we would have beat the contract.” And, as usual, Mr. Champion was right.
