Legal Nehttng On Segregation

Further legal wrangling appeared likely today to delay indefinitely an end to segregated seating on buses in the Sou h despite a U. S. Supreme Court decision Tuesday. The court ruled that loca'l bus

segregation laws of Montgomery, Ala., are unconstitutional. The decision apparently would apply in principle to othet states, but did not rule out segregated seating by the carriers them-.-iclves. Alabama state Sen. Sam Engelhardt, executive secretary of the VVhite Citizens Councils of Alabama, said “the people of Alabama are not going to put up with integration.”

Immediately after the Supreme Court decision wa’s handed down President C. C. Jack Owen of the Alabama Public Service Commission announced a plan under which intrastate carriers would continue to segregate Negroes in order to preserve public peace. In Florida, state Atty. Gen. Richard Ervin sarid the decision will have no bearing on his state “until direct suit Ls brought against our laws and city ordinances.”

Abel, who was anxious to sec the queen of hearts finessed, discarded the deuce of hearts. This effort to conceal th fact that he had the king was just a httle too innocent. Mr. Masters was not fooled He felt that if Mr. Abel actually did not have the king of hearts, he would not advertise that fact—especially so ear!\ in the hand and when he sv.ielv had a worthless spade which he . ojld have played. So, placing the king of hearts on his right, Mr. Masters looked for some way to make the hand other than through a heart finnesse. It occurred to him that if Mr. Abel had both king and jack of hearts and as many as four diamonds, a squeeze would

operate. SQUEEZE PLAY Beginning at trick six he cashed dummy’s ace of hearts, returning to his hand with the ace of diamonds and ran off the rest of his trumps. From dummy he discarded all of the remaining hearts. On the lead of the last trump. Mr. Abel’s hand was reduced to the king of hearts and three diaj monds to the jack. It was his play to the tenth trick. If he I dropped a diamond, all three of l dummy’s diamonds would be I good. Hoping desperately that Mr. Dale held the ten of hearts, he discarded the king of that suit. But Mr. Masters then cashed the

ten of hearts, discarding the nine of diamonds from the txrard.

, Dummy's king and queen of dia1 monds took the last two tricks.

When Mr. Masters’ two cTjd response was promptly raised, he ! sensed the possibility of a slam. | He bid diamonds to show’ first ; round control of that suit. When his partner raised dia- ! monds, too, he disliked the idea I of merely going to five clubs. ! which probably would be pass- j ed. Instead he elected to bid | four hearts as a further slam | try- and Mr. Champion lost no time in accepting the suggestion. BOLDNESS JUSTIFIED Mr. Masters’ heart holding should have been better for his four-heart call, but his play of the hand justified his boldness. Mr. Dale would have done better if he had opened the play with a heart, but he decided to lay down the ace of spades. On came the queen of spades and here Mr. Masters ruffed in dummy. He led a small club to his king and ruffed his last spade. Next he lead down dummy’s queen of clubs and here Mr.
