FAIRLY SPOKEN Returning Coats to Store Raises Price for All of Us By Margaret Latrobe Men, it say's here, enjoy taking their wives along when shopping for clothes. More often than not, it’s mamma who peers at the worsted in the haberdashery’s front window to be . t »ure it’s a good true blue by daylight. And her husband is delighted with the suit she picks out for him. SalesI men in stores for men will teli ; you to look out for the little woman—she knows what she wants. For Pop. Funny that when milady gets into a aalon for her own duds, she knows from nothing. Not one female in a dressmaker’s dozen buys clothes on a budget. Not one in ten really plans cloths ahead of momentary needs and inspiration. Women customers are always wrong, in their own minds, even when they’re right. Which is why a coat buyer of 30 years experience says, ruefully, "Between one-fourth and onehalf of our merchandise is returned.” Nothing wrong with it, not worn once and sneakily sent back for credit—just returned I because women buy thoughtlessly, irresponsibly and for the goofiest of reasons. This buyer told me of customers who bring a friend or two around for a lovely afternoon of trying on clothes. After taking up an hour or two of a saleslady’s time they feel they ought to buy something. Rude not to. So a coat or a dress or a suit is j “charged and sent.” Milady knows for sure it’s going straight back Monday morning. And this brief weekend visit costs the store a dollar each way for the j trip. In men’s clothes it’s different. Maybe Sam made the pants too long, but at least he made them just for Pop. And they can’t be i returned without a board of directors’ meeting to find out why. Another shop owner experienc- ' ed (and disillusioned) in the

ways of women shoppers says it’s the triple-view mirror that causes customers to snap at the help. “I can’t look that bad,” they think, immediately venting their anger on whoever is near. Those killing time usually are the illtempered clavichords, lySome shops protect themselves by a no-nonsense policy about ‘approvals.” If madame approves of a garment enough to buy it, her approval had better hold out. They aren’t taking back nothing from nobody. Yet most shops are understanding about genuine resquests to match colors or fabrics at home, provided the garment is back in the store the next morning. Maybe the ladies shouldn’t be admitted to shops without some man in tow. If wives select men’s
clothes so successfully, perhaps the menfolks would work miracles in reverse. (Shops love to j see a man accompanying his wife. The lads will spend more, and faster than a lone doll.) Or maybe they ought to strike off some medals for customers who haven’t returned a nickle’s worth in XXX years. This wacky habit of sending the stuff back where it came from is raising the price of coa-s I —for us all.
