By Margaret Latrobe Some Random Remarks On Herbs and Cranes Most of us feel unworthy of the good will of our friends, knowing as we do what crumbs we ream- are. Actually, we amount to a lot more than we give ourselves credit for—but because we know some slight selfdefect undetected by cur friends we wrongly feel undeserving of the trust placed in us. And the jerks who openly don’t like us we put down as churlish, unappreciative nothings. We deserve better than that! It’s odd, but it’s the way our puny minds
work.
For a long time I’ve suffered from the knowledge that with herbs I have no real style, no na-
tural flair, no true

Most people, man, woman or child, can take a pinch of herb and come up with a salad the guests write home about. But not I. To me thyme smells like mentholatum. I get no comfort nor kudos upon applying coriander to iettuce. Under my supervision oregano spooned into something Italian comes out Pakistani. Saffrom cautiously coloring my rice casseroles attains not only a jaundiced look but causes hungry men to give up eating. This ineptitude is something I must acknowledge, live with, and perchance rise above. Another personality defect causing me untold chagrin is the total inability to appreciate the plight of the whooping crane. This, as you cannot avoid knowing, is a large two-legged bird which for certain (probably excellent) reasons was nearly extinct. It was, until the Audubon people coddled and pampered the remaining handful who eventually brought their citizenry to 31. The whooping crane (and I rationalize. to brace my flagging self-esteem) does not talk sensibly as do parakeets, parrots and mynah birds. It yells in uncouth fashion, usually about nothing.

PRINCic BERNHARD of The Netherlands adbists a life jacket in JacksonvSle, Fla., before taking off for the aircraft carrier Forrestal. The prince made
bow-legged. A heavy body, white with black wipgs .and mustache, perches atop tlje pipestem legs. Believe n^e, I know my complete indifference to this estimable fowl is shameful, undemocratic and unfeeling. The whooping crane has its rights as one of God’s creatures. Privately, I figure the Lord knew what He was doing in making extinction the next move and if I were one of those Audubon authorities I would ask myself whether-it is ever a good thing to interfere with what appears to be Divine
Plan.
So it’s a rare bird. Yeh? So it must have its wings clipped to prevent northward migration. Yeh ? My one kind reaction is, why impede the trip?
