One of the strange phenomena peculiar to men is that they can be staunch in the face of danger, and quivering cowards when con fronted by the inconsequential. ARCHER UNDER ARREST DOS ANGELES (UP)—Two sheriff detectives prepared today to fly to Providence, R. I. to pick up a 17-year old youth accused of shooting a liquor store clerk with a steel-tipped arrow fired from a crossbow. The suspect, Michael Yosick, of San Diego, Calif., was arrested Friday in a Providence Hotel, ending a nationwide search. Providence police said Yosick admitted shooting William Allen, 20, in the back on the night of Sept. 19 in an abortive attempt to rob the East Los Angales liquor store where Allen worked.

HEART LEAD This exchange stemmed from the following play in today’s deal. Mrs. Keen opened the five of hearts and Mr. Muzzy was delighted that he was in a position to take the heart finesse without any risk whatsoever. He played the jack from dummy and ruffed when the king came up on his right. Now he led the king of diamonds and Mr. Meek won with the ace and returned the suit. Mr. Muzzy took the second lead of diamonds with the ueen and led a third round of the suit to dummq’s nine. Next he cashed dummy’s ace and queen of hearts, discarding the ten of spades and a small club from his hand. It was all up to the club suit now. He played the ace and another club, but when Mrs. Keen showed up with both the king and the jack, he was down one. COMMON ERROR Mr. Muzzy’s faulty discarding is not an uncommon error. In discarding from two suits it seems natural to choose first the suit where it is possible to get rid of all losers—as was the case in the spade suit in today’s
hand.
Actually, there was no pressing need to get rid of the ten of spades from the closed hand immediately, because the ace controlled the suit. Suppose Mr. Muzzy had bided his time and played as follows. Ruff the first trick with the ten of diamonds and lead the trey of diamonds to dummy’s
