Miller School News A wonderful group of pupils as well as the weather-man have joined forces in getting school off to a good start at Miller. 396 pupils are enrolled. Verna' Garl, Nellie Hurst and Ellis Haltom arenew members of the teaching staff and are contributing much to the progress of the ■school. Mrs. Zi**g's Fifth grade, Mrs. Miller's Fourth grade and Mr. Haltom's Sixth grade have made trips to the public library. Instruction in the itse of the library was given by Miss Taylor, and each pupil secured a library card and checked cnit books. Sara Humbert and Jane Turk were recent guests of Hurst-Avery Sixth grade ard gave a most fascinating report of their summer journey through Europe. Pupils of the rooms of Mrs. Garl and Mrs. Roekhill have done a faJKinating and profitable “scientific study of insects. Collecting. mounting, display and reporting were steps employed in the study. Fathers also had a part as they assisted in the construction of insect nets. The School Safety Patrol boys were driven to the Invitational Pistol Meet by Dr. Schamvecker, Mr. Stout, Mr. Ernshaw and Mr. Kurtz where they met Governor Craig and many of the contestants Don McLean and Trooper Brackney made the necessary arrangements for the trip. Many pupils will be visiting the Farm Progress Show Friday. Patrons and friends are always welcome

to visit school.

Route 2, was lodged in the Putnam county jail Wednesday night on a contempt of court charge. Rulfs was taken into custody in Lebanon by Sheriff Joe Rollings.

Robert Pickett of Fillmore wa* exhibiting a sweet potato here | this morning that weighed four pounds ten and one third ounces. It is believed to be the biggest | one that has been grown in Putnam county. The sweet, potato was planted, along with the rest j of the garden and cultivated only | when the garden was plowed. It came from the Joe Ellis greenhouse on Bloomington street.

HiNtorical Society Holds Meeting The Putnam County Historica. Society met on Wednesday evening at Old Trail Inn with a largo | attendance. The meeting opened with a j prayer by Dr. Manhart aftei which was a volunteer program on “Historical Finds of the Year.” Mrs. Meia E. Long found the history of the Connoi family in Perry County which are her ancestors. Miss Eleanor Cammack read a description of Greencastle in June, 1837 which told about tlu , laying of the first cornerstone of ; DePauw University. Cyrus Nutt was in charge and ten thousand I people heard Rev. Dr. Bascomb give an address of two hours in length. The lead box that was in this cornerstone is now in the

archives.

Dr. Tippy is in receipt of a letter from a lady in Saskatoon. I Saskatchewan who is coming I here to study the archives as tire | method used has been recomi mended to her. Several have sent in fine reports. Miss Cam- | mack is editing the “Indiana I Magazine of Histmy” by Cyrus | Nutt. The archives is to have a tent' vault in the new library. Dr. Crandall repc-rts that the Albert Woolson monument has been placed in the Gettysburg cemetery. An artist from Denver, Colorado made it in bronz f - Woolson is seated with his hat in his hand upon which are the words “The Last of the G. A. R.” Sanford Romine has offered a prize to any high school person who will make a picture of pioneer art. A committee was appointed to see if interest could be obtained along these lines.

Mrs. Donald ’York Hostess To Club The West Madison Home Demonstration Club met Sept. 26 at the home of Mrs. Donald York. The president, Mrs. Paul Aker, had members repeat the Flag Salute and Club Creed in unison. Roll call was answered by 18 members with a “Child’s Cute Saying.” Guests at the meeting I were Mrs. Max O'Hair and Mrs. | Frank Davis. The secretary and treasurer reports were read and approved. The song leader, Mrs. David Barr gave the history of the song of the month when the Corn is Waving” The lesson, “Furniture Arrangement Part II, was very ably given by Mrs. Wendell Thomas. A Safety Report was given by Mrs. Wiltiam Day. Mrs. Everett Ellis gave a Garden Hint. During the social hour the hostess served very attractive refreshments and secret sister gifts |were exchanged. Our next meeting will be Oct. 24th at the home cf Mrs. W'endell Thomas at 1:30 p. m.
