The fortunate distribution of the spade suit would have enabled her to make game by leading a small spade and finessing dummy’s eight. Thatvwould lose to the queen but a second spade finesse would bring in three tricks in the suit and the defenders would not be able to take more than four tricks. , NO PLAY As it was. Mr. Dale held the first trick. He led the queen of hearts at trick two. dummy’s king was captured and, after losing four hearts, Miss Brash had no play for nine tricks. Mrs. Fusty knew the seven of hearts would win ,by using the rule of eleven. My mail indicates that there is a widespread interest in this device. It appears that many players know nothing about it, others know a little but do not know how to apply it in actual play’. SUBJECT OVERLOOKED It is true that the subject has been overlooked in bridge literature. Possibly that is because bridge writers consder it such a basic part of the game that they assume their readers have knowledge of it.

Since the rule of eleven plays such an important part in a winning game. I would l.ke to star: at the cegir.ning in the foliowi-.g series of columns and show you how it works, why it works, and what it will do for you if you use it properly. Even if y’ou are an old hand at the game and have been using this method of counting for years, stick around a few day’s. I plan to dig up some pretty fancy uses for your old friend.
