Blackwood On Bridge Two Bid Justified If Only One Trick Needed For Game In deciding whether or not to open a hand with a. forcing two bid, here is the question to ask yourself: ‘Ts there a holding my partner could reasonably be expected to have which he would pass opposite my one bid—but which would give me a good play for game?’’ If the answer is “no” then a two bid is not in order. South dealer East-West vulnerable NORTH Mr. Meek A Q 6 V 6 3 ♦ J 7 6 5 3 2 *974 WEST EAST Mr. Dale Miss Brash A J 9 4 2 A 10 875 V 9 5 4 V A 8 ♦ A Q 9 4 K 10 4 A 10 52 A K 8 6 3 SOUTH. . |Mr. Masters A* A K 8 V K Q J 10 7 2 ♦ 8 A A Q J The bidding: South West North East 2 V Pass 2 NT Pass 3 V Pass 3 NT Pass 4 V All Pass To put it another way, you are justified in opening with a two bid if your hand will come within one trick of making game without any help whatsoever from partner. HONOR TRICKS Of course you should have at least four honor tricks and the reason for this is that if you hold less, the opponents may actually outhold you in high cards. Then, if they enter the bidding, your partner may start doubling them prematurely, figuring you for a really big defensive (honor) holding. In considering his hand for a two bid in today's deal, Mr. Masters figured there were a number of slight values which his partner could have—not enough for a response to a one heart opening, and yet enough to round out a 10trick game at hearts. The queen of spades would do it—or a doubleton spade and several trumps. The king of clubs would be satisfactory. A singleton club or even a doubleton club might serve. Or Mr. Meek could have one of the red aces and no other honor cards. (He is not one to stretch to keep a one bid open.’) GAME A CERTAINTY There are other cards and distributions which Mr. Masters might find across the table which would make game a certainty. All in all, he felt he would have to be extremely unlucky to find Mr. Meek's hatnd absolutely 1 worthless. With his pitiful holding, Mr. Meek naturally took a very , gloomy view of the proceedings. Even with a partner like Masters he expected to go set at four hearts. But, when Mr. Dale failed to get off to a trump lead, Mr. Meek's hand took two tricks and Mr. Masters made five-odd. The opening lead was the deuce of spades which was won on the board with the queen. Mr. Masters immediately took a club fine.<«e. When this held, he cashed the ace of clubs and his two top spades, discarding the last club from dummy. He ruffed his last club on the board and lost only 1 the two red aces.
