Memories of Caruso’s Voice and Generosity By Margaret Latrobe If you are in need of a good quiet cry and have nothing at hand to cry over I recommeni the story of Caruso. Although he was possessed of the greatest voice we have ever known, there were other equally great qualities about Caruso which caused his friend Huneker to write, “He remains the dearest memory in this drab, prosaic age.” H:s was a great love story,
too. interrupted after a brief marriage to the unworldly young Dorothy Benjamin, by Carusos' death in Italy, 1921. In her book, “Enrico Caruso; His Life and Death." his wife said she was invariably asked. “Why did Can/so marry you?” Not, "Why did you marry Caruso?” The tactlessness of the question she found amusing, since she wondered the same After al!, when they met, Enrico Caruso was at the pinnacle of operatic fame. Wherever he went he was mobbed by wellwishers, some of whom knew only that he sang like a god without having heard the voice ol pu.^e gold. But they loved him from the legend of his greatness. As a singer? In part, but perhaps more because of his great human Qualities. Dorothy was neither musical nor a linguist (he spoke seven languages) and certamly not famous. But he loved her. The shopping trips—! How he adored giving! At his death, lists
were found containing names of those who regularly received money from Caruso. His wife didn’t know who they were, why he sent them funds—but only that it was characteristic of him. Once, seeing him before a desk full of checks to be sent strangers asking for help, she protested. Surely not all these were deserving of help? Ah yes. she was right—but could she tell him which were not ? And shopping for Christmas! He adored antiques. smiU jeweled boxes and gold coins. To his friends who loved antiques he gave antiques. To those who did not, he gave exquisite gold .aouvenirs. But to all he gave magnificently. Shortly after their marriage he took Dorothy to a furrier for a “warm coat.” She had never visited such a shop and was overcome at the probable cost of the array of ermine, broadtail, otter, sables and mink sweeping past on the mannequins. “Which you

moleskin jacket, which he instantly ordered. Turning to the rnanagter, he added. “We will take them all.” As I write this, Caruso's golden voice, full of sadness, rings out from the next room. And I remember what his heartbroken wife wrote after that Italian summer day when he left her forever. “I knew that one day I would have to hear his voice again on a record. The thought that it might come from a strange house, through an open window, was unbearable I could prepare myself for his anguish only by first fa-cing it here, and alone. ... I chose one of the gayest of his songs, ‘Luna d’estate,’ and put it on the Victrola. Once again his voice was in the room, but I sat listening almost without recognition, my heart locked in ice, until I saw Gloria (their baby daughter) stumbling through the doorway, holding out her arms

The point is that you n double for a takeout just because you have a fairly good hand, say 14 or 15 points in high cards. You should also be able to play any suit your partner bids or you should have a good suit of
year own.
