British Visitors Airs Views On U. S. Children By Margaret I^atrobe Sir Basil Henriques, English authority on juvenile delinquency, was a recent guest in this country—and he went home

in a bad mood.

Beneath the headline, “Sir Basil says American TV is evil,” the Sunday Express published his statement from Liverpool: — “Juvenile crime in Britain is — 1 negligible compared with the United States. Gangsterism there ir. such as we do not know in England. After visiting courts all over the U. S., I heard cases far worse than any I had ever listened to in my 33 years on the Bench. Car stealing is one of the most common of juvenile crimes They seem to think nothing of it. American television is a pernicious evil. Perhaps I was unlucky,” he said, “but I saw nothing but murder, divorce and

prison scenes.

“The trouble is that children are watching this instead of doing their homework. There is no doubt tha-t TV is a contributory factor to juvenile crime in

America.

“Another cause is lack of dis- | cipline in the home. Children rule the parents instead of parents ruling the children. Then there is this widespread lust for material things in which the example is

set by the parents.”

Before we get in a mood to match Sir Basil’s, it might be well to remember that the purpose of his visit was a narrow one: That of studying juvenile crime. His observations were

to our troubled and

1 markable exhibition of original scientific projects in Washington. D. C., conducted by gifted young American students. This exhibit was in progress while Sir Basil investigated criminal activities. While the projects would have been beyond his comprehension, their achievement might have brightened his outlook a bit. “Materialism” — which to a Britisher always means pink bathtubs and central heating — is always good for a slap at Americans. Having no modem plumbing of their own, and stuffily opposed to indoor warmth above 50 degrees, Britishers are usually enraged at the sight of “moneyinad” Americans laundering themselves and their clothes via jewel-toned appliances. Quite enough to turn Yorkshire pudding to dust in their mouths. And central heat ? Frightful waste, old boy, when the charwoman can lug scuttles of coal above stairs. As for Sir Basil’s unlucky encounter with TV, perhaps he saw the same late movies we did (British-made, as it happens, and full of divorce, murder and sun- ! dry). _ We are not proud of the delinquency situation here. It is our national shame. Perhaps when I our best minds and funds can be applied to the problem, instead of to international crises, a solution will be found. Until then ,it might be more appropriate for visitors to withhold comment so misrepresentative of AmeriI cans young and not so young.

troublesome youth, not the overwhelming majority of fine young citizens of whom we are so proud. It would seem, however, that juvenile delinquency records might have assumed a better proportion in this critic’s mind had they been observed in relation to the whole picture rather than separately. PROVIDENCE, R. I.—(UP)— State officials recently shipped Rhode Island off to a boy in Caliiornia so the state could get back on the map. Seems Alan Zukerman of San Leandro, Calif., had a map of the United States made up as a plastic jig-saw puzzle. One day he noticed that Rhode Island was missing so he wrote Gov. Dennis J. Roberts asking for help. Officials contacted the manufacturer who happened to be located in the state and outlined the predicament. The manufacturer said Rhode Island frequently gets lost out of the sets because it is so small. The missing piece was mailed to the boy.

slam contract on a squeeze. But the squeeze could not have been executed if the defenders had played in a certain manner. Mr. Meek led the queen of clubs, Mrs. Keen played the deuce and the king won. How would you proceed from this point? There was one possible loser in hearts and one in diamonds, if the latter suit failed to break 3-3.

SPADE ENTRY If Mrs. Keen had the king of j hearts and only one other heart, ! dummy could be entered with the ! ace of spades and a heart finesse | would eliminate the loser in that suit. Another l.ne of play was to take a spade finesse and, if suci cessful, discard the six of diamonds on the aee of spades. Mr. Champion’s final derision i was to lay down the a'e of hearts j follow with the queen, and await developments. Mr. Meek won the second heart lead and could have ruined the rhanees for a squeeze by returning a spade. If Mr. Champion took a spade finesse he would kxse to the king and that would be the setting triek. If he went up with the ace, he would be using up dummy’s last on try. SAFE WAY But Mr. Meek, playing it the safe way as usua-l, returned the 10 of clubs. Mr. Champion won with the aee. cashed three more trumps, then laid down his three top diamonds. Next came the last trump, getting everybody down to two cards. Mr. Meek couldn't discard his jack of clubs without setting up dummy’s nine spot, so he got down to one spade. The nine of clubs was played from dummy, leaving there only the ace and queen of spades. How Mrs. Keen was forced to k?ep the jack of diamonds to beat Mr. Champion's six spot and she, too, had to part with a spade. Mr. Champion won the last two tricks by leading a spade and going up with dummy’s ace. This dropped the king and the queen won the last trick.

American Motors cars are a single unit like modern trains and planes. Big frame boxgirders make a steel enclosure as big as the car, giving true “wrap-around” protection. It’s welded, twice as strong, twice as safe,

twice as long-lasting.

Other cars still bolt the body to a separate, flat frame . . . the same basic construction

principle used in building oxcarts.

CHICAGO —(UP)—Four years of dental schooling costs nearly $12,000, the Journal of the American Dental Association says. The Association’s Council on Dental Education and the U. S. Public Health Service surveyed 9,521 students and found that tuition and similar expenses amounted to an average ot $4,465. Living costs were about $7,349. The Journal said it costs about three times as much each year to educate a dental student as it did 20 years ago. But it said that if allowance is made for the decline of purchasing value of the dollar, today’s longer year I and other factors, student expenses roughly approximate those of 20 years ago.
