House Plants Vary According To Whims By Margaret I.atrnbe A house plant should be happy, yet. Heredity’ counts, but look out for that environment among the geraniums. “If he doesn't like sun, if he doesn’t get enough to drink, if he feels uncomfortable in his surroundings— he won't be happy’. ... You won't be able to keep him long! said the lady selling house plants. (He? Would the above remind you of anyone we know, excusing the begonias? It’s barely possible j that all living things of mascukne gender have much in comj mon.) Now I don’t for a moment believe that a house plant is a “he” or “she.” Sure, I've heard the rumors about holly trees but the calladiums and cyclamen are just plain neuters to me. That they’ are capable, however, of taking one gander at the joint and deciding they aren’t happy i- a fact not to be gainsaid. Innocent that I am, it had seemed that sunny windows, a bit of earth and intermittent

watering were quite enough for these multicolored plants to flourish. Plus that enviable green thumb of earnest housewives. Huh-uh. Where one variety of ivy will thrive in wholesome fashion under blazing sunlight, another will droop and poop within minutes. And those lush tropical types require more thermostats and baioroeters and spray baths than the local gymnasium. Brighten up dark coiners with greenery? Nothing doing. Either knock out a wall, move to another and brighter domicile, or give up. Light must suit the plant not you. Trouble is that no two of them are “happy” under identical conditions, and none of them too doggoned thrilled with your present architecture. A bit of earth ? Better have it baked, strained and analyzed before trusting your precious to its care. Some house plants are so spoiled they won’t even tolerate soil. Bulbs like rocks and sand, whereas a draecena would throw them right back at you. ' African violets ? Well, nobody seems to know for sure what they like, although books have been writ on their distastes. The container? Neither too large nor too small, lest even loots of the creatures get notions of unhappiness. If you ask me, I think house plants got sore when they were relegated to built-in planters on the floor of these new homes. Further, about the only way an amateur can lick the problem is to conceal somewhere on the plant’s person a card stating its whims, peculiarities and customs. Even with fancy soil rotenone baths every Saturday night, temperature and humidity controls, kind words and .sunlight—if "he” ain’t happy” he won't be around long. Anyone for philodendron? Imitation, that is. Auditor Due To Give Testimony INDIANAPOLIS. Jan. 24.— (UP)—State Auditor Curtis Rardin was scheduled to give his version of a Statehouse bribe proposition to a grand jury today. Prosecutor John Tinder said that might wind up the investigation. William Sayer, former administrative assistant to Governor Craig, was summoned to appear from Florida, but Tindei said the testimony by Rardin might answer questions the jurors planned to ask Sayer. Rardin previously postponed his testimony while his attorney prepared evidence. The auditor did have a conference with Tinder two weeks ago when the prolje started. Rardin was expected to tell the six member grand jury that he solicited a bribe from Toll Road Director Albert Wedeking in an effort to “trap” Wedeking not for personal gain. The lure was Rardin’s vote transferring funds to the tur npike commission.
