EXPLANATION “Why couldn't she have had ! two spades and one club?” Mr. | j New asked. Mr. Masters was patient. “Because after the queen of clubs held, she surely had the king left.” he replied. "But she could have nad fmir hearts and fi"e diamonds,” Mr. j New persisted. “You have told ne that sometimes L . hould open i heart rather tha i a diamond.

with that distribution.” “Not when you’ve got a strong hand.” said Mr. Masters, "and certainly Mrs. Keen had a strong hand when she could come in at the three level opposite a passing partner. No, I think the inference that she had 10 cards in the red suits was a very strong

erne in this case.

"Of course." he added, ”if she had not bid diamonds at all. I wouldn’t have had much reason < take the spade finesse.”

that when you are clearly &-ut held on a hand it is usually best to retire from the bidding rather than continue fighting for a lost cause. Mrs. Keen had a good hand but when her partner passed and both opponents bid, there was practically no chance of her buying the contract. Her three diamond bid gave much more help to the enemy than it did to her own .side. GOOD FINESSE * She led the king cf hearts and Mr. Masters won with the ace. He led a club and finessed dummy's queen. He cashed the ace of spades. Next he led dummy’s last spade and without much thought finessed the 10. When this held, he cashed two more .pades. then led a diamond. Mrs. Keen had no better play than the ace. S|:e continued learts and Mr. Masters ended up icsing one heart and two dia-

nonds.

“How did you decide on the ire'-se of the ten jf spades?’ .sked Mr. New. in admiration. "It wasn't a sure thing.” Mr. Masters replied, “but after Mrs. Keen followed to the ace of spades. I figured she had started with five hearts, five diamonds, and two clubs. Therefore she couldn't have more than one
