legists can help them. The culprit, protected by the feder al government, is the colorful but shy, pileated woodpecker. He is a large bird that is appearing in increasing numbers in heavy timber areas. /“When you hear one of these birds wracking away at a tree you’d think it's a man with an axe,’’ said Dr. William C. Bramble, acting director of the school of forestry and head of the project. Woodpeckers do most of their damage in isolated mountain areas where high tension lines pass through heavy timber. The holes chopped by the birds often weaken the poles to such an extent that they must be replaced. Utility companies, which have been working on the problem for some time, have tried several gimmicks to keep the woodpeckers away from poles. One of the methods being used is to paint the poles. Knowing that birds recognize color, the scientists have painted poles of a high ten ion line ..near Lock liaven, Pc.., with red, green, yellow and white par BLIND MAN EXPERT IN X-RAY WORK TOLEDO , O., Jan. J.— (UP) Alva Jay Francis, blind for 10 years, has become an important end useful member of the St. Charles Hospital staff here. He works in the hospital’s X-ray department. developing and pro<"cs -ing negatives. Dr. John W. Smylhe, director of the hospital’s department of radiology, said Francis’ work has been exceptionally good. “The developing technique of X-ray negatives is strict and Jay's following the same routine with all negatives without distraction makes the results more Constant, a necessary factor in obtaining a good reading,” Smythe said. He pointed out this means fewer errors in processing, eliminating retakes of patient X-rays and in general speeds the work of the department. A native of East Lynn, W. Va., Francis was a door-to-door salesman of blind-made articles in Akron when a blind friend toid him of the opportunities in X-ray work. He studied in Cleveland, then went to work here. HELMET CAMERA IS DEVISED BY PILOT ST. LOUIS. Jan. •.— (UP) — “It’s using your head that counts,” according to jet test i pilot. Cera!I Huclsbeck. who has ■ invented a helmet-mounted cam?ra he can operate with a twist of the head. Huelrbeck, who flew 54 com>at missions in Korea, said he ■v-ver did like the idea of taking lis hands off the controls to nake movies of other jets in flight. So the 27-year-old former Navy pilot took a modified gun amera, weighing less than a pound, .u’.d attached it to the side of his flight helmet. The sight
projects on wire in front of his right eye. To compensate for the weight, he hooked lea! weights to the other side of tin helmet. Now all he has to do to make 50-foot movies with the electrically operated camera is to turn his head toward the subject. “There have been no complaints about the pictures,” the McDonnell Aircraft Corp, pilot said.
