GOSPEL nt CHRIST

THE RISEN LORD

The resurrection of Christ is the greatest fact of all ages. On this fact the whole religion and hope of Christianity depend. The shortest and most undeniable way to prove the whole truth and absolute certainty of the Christian religion is to prove the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. This proved, Atheism and Skepticism of every name will fall prostrate to the ground. The unbeliever himself will say: “Let it be proven that Jesus Christ arose from the grave, walked upon the earth, and ate and drank with men, and in the presence of witnesses, ascended up to heaven, and I will believe.” It follows that if Christ be not risen from the grave, then: (1) He is not the Son of God (Romans 1:4); (2) The gospel has ro ground for foundation, (1 Corinthians 15:1-41; (3) Our faith is vain (1 Corinthians 15:17); (4i There is no resurrection for us (1 Corinthians 15:20-22 i; (5) Our hope is vain d Peter 1:3); (6i Baptism is without a purpose (1 Peter 3:21). One of the main points of all the apostles' preaching was to prove that Jesus of Nazareth, whom the Jews crucified, arose from the dead. (Acts 2:22-24. 36; 4:10; 17:1-3). There are some things concemirg Jesus of Nazareth which are matters of common agreement. The friends and foes of Jesus alike unite in believing: (1) that there once lived on the earth such a person as He: (2i that this person lived at the time ascribed to Him in the New Testament; (3) that He was put to death under Pontius Pilate during the reign of Tiberias Caesar; (4» that HLs body was taken from the cross and placed in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea. and a huge stone was plac-

ed at the dcor of the sepulchre; (5) th t upon the third morning the body was missing. But the controv. rsy is over th ■ empty tomb. “What .became of the body of Jesus?” The Christian b: lieve with abiding faith that Jesus earn** triumphantly forth from the securely seal* d and heavily guarded tomb. But why ho they believe this? Let u notice some cf the evidence in support of the belief of the resurrection of Christ! THE TESTIMONY OF THE OPEN SEPULCHRE Luke 24:1-2.

This the disciples did not expect. Mar k 16:1-3). Who could have opened the tomb? Certainly not the Homan . for their own soldiers were guarji.-g it. Surely not the Jews, for th< y h id requested that the grave be carefully guarded. (Matthew 27 62-66). It e uid not have .bee" the disciple . for they had no police power with which • * •welcome Roman guard. Furthermo e, they did not even, expect him to rise. John 20:9i. Then, who rolled the tone aw iy? “And, behold, there was a great < irthquake: for the angel of th<- Lo. d descended from Heaven, and < .me an I rolled back the stone from the dooi nd sat upon it.” * Matthew 28:2'. If an angel did not roll the stone away, then, who did? What became of the holy? Did the gardner remove i‘. as M iry first supposed? (John 20:15 But how could he have gotten thr ugh th*- Roman guard? Did the disciples steal the body away? (Matthew 28:J3i But how couid they have gotten by the guard? “But they were asleep, ' siys an obje. - or. Surely not a whole Roman gu mi asleep. But why would the li * :pl s want to remove the body? They had no motive in doing this, for they dd not even believe in th** resurrection, until after Jesus made his a pea ince to them, follow.ng his resurrection. (Continue..,
