Abrams, who served as chief of the legal division, office of supreme commander for Allied powers, told of the explosive situation when 30.000 American soldiers took over occupancy of millions of Japanese under General Douglas MapArthur. Abrams attributed the friendly welcome given Americans to the high character of the troops and an order from General MacArthur to "let your conduct characterize the highest principles of j Christianity and Humanity” in I dealing with the Japanese, long trained for hositility. Lack of looting and rape amazed officialdom and the simple kindly act of a G.I. toward an old lady of a hated race on a Tokyo street car did much to change their attitude toward our troops and throw away their daggers, Abrams declared. "It was never definitely known what unsung American soldier performed this friendly deed or just what he did. "The most thrilling musical experience of my life was singing of the "Messiah” on Christmas 1945 in a Tokyo auditorium by a chorus of 80 Japanese Girls and 80 American soldiers, under a Swiss director,” said Abrams, himself a musician of note. x “This was one time in history when the right man was selected for the right job in the Pacific.” And we are going to lose if we don’t follow his advice,” Abrams concluded.
