Blackwood On Bridge Mr. Muzzy Is Taught The Art Of Finessing “You experts,” complained Mr. Muzzy, "are always telling me I should have finessed when I didn't and vice versa. What I want to know' is, how you ean tell when to finesse—and when to forget about finessing and just lay down your high cards.”

Muzzy,” said Mr. Champion. “You’re either born with it or. . “Come off it,” replied Mr. Muzzy angrily. “You can’t know for sure about finessing unless vou can see all four hands.” “You can see ail four hands and stili not know,” said Mr. Champion nastily. “Just a minute, gentlemen,” interrupted Mr. Masters, who usually assumes the role of oeffcemaker. “Muzzy asked a fair question. Let’s tell him the situations where odds favor refusing !he finesse.” FIRST POINT Today’s hand illustrates Mr. Masters’ first point. Mr. Champion opened the queen of hearts and Mr. Muzzy won the zze. He immediately entered dummy with the king of clubs, returned the jack of spades and let it
ride.
Here the fireworks started. Mr. Champion won with the king of spades. He led the jack of hearts and Miss Brash ruffed. She returned the queen of clubs, Mr. Muzzy played the ace and Mr. Champion ruffed. The ace of
diamond? provided the setting trick. Would you have made this contract? You should have in spite of the fact the adverse distribution was admittedly very rough*. TAKE TEN i The point is that your main job here is not to locate the king 1 of spades. It is to take 10 tricks. And this you can do by laying down the ace of spades at trick two and following with another spade. Now the defenders will win one spade trick instead of ! hree. Mr. Muzzy wants to know how to recognize the need for such a play. The answer lies in the bidding and play of each hand.. In this deal Mr. Muzzv had two warnings of a possible ruff by the opponents. One warning was Mr. Champion’s vulnerable heart overcall, indicaiing a long heart suit. Another was the play of the nine of hearts by Miss Brash at trick one. And as a clincher there was always the fact that Mr. Muzzy didn’t need a successful spade finesse to make his game.
