"tv 'ised all three plavs to make her slam contract. Mr. Champion’s opening lead was the deuce of dubs, an obvious singleton. Mrs. Fusty won with the king and noted that the h./nd was not quite a laydown. If she led the ace of clubs, Mr. Champion would ruff and later she woruld lose a diamond trick. I f she picked up the opposing trumps, ■what would she do with the^trey of clubs and her diamonds ? UNDAUNTED Undaunted by these apparently insurmountable obstacles, Mrs. Fusty went ahead with her play. At trick two she led a heart to dummy’s ace. returned a small heart and ruffed it. She went to dummy, again with the king of diamonds, led another heart and saw sc club discarded on her light. Clearly dummy’s fifth heart could not be established, so she ruffed with the ace of spades and started off on a new ’ine. She led a small spade to dummy’s nine, returned another heart and ruffed it with the 10 of spa-des. Now she Jed her last spade, the queen, and overtook it with dummy’s king. Next came dummy’s jack of spades on which

Mrs. Fusty discarded a diamond. OPEN BOOK By this time Miss Brash's distribution was an open book. By inference, she had started with seven clubs. She had followed suit twice to hearts and once to diamonds. When she followed to ♦ hree leads of spades, it was practically certain that she had nothing left but clubs. At the 10th trick, then, Mrs. Fusty led dummy’s last club and ducked the trick, letting Miss Brash win. She figured the club return would squeeze Mr. Champion. And. as you see, she was right. She won Miss Brash’s club lead with the ace and Mr. Champion had to play to the trick, holding Q 10 in diamonds and the queen of hearts. He had to play before dummy which now consisted of K 3 in diamonds and the jack of hearts. He was gone. If he dropped his heart dummy’s jack would be good. So he discarded the 10 of diamonds and Mrs. Fusty won the last two tricks in the diamond suit.
