FAIRLY SPOKEN Lessening Slaufhter On Nation’s Highways By Margaret Latrobe When Doctor Paul Dudley White, heart specialist of Boston, spoke so eloquently about President Eisenhower’s coron•ry attack, the natioi. listened, lis every word and shade of meaning was vitally interesting. The President himself only a 'ew months ago had spoken ven more eloquently about a similar kind of “heart" trouble. That which is affecting the counry in much the same manner is occurs in human arteries. T <*' an the nation’s highways. Mr. Eisenhower did much the ame thing as Doctor White, consulting with other specialists, tening to technicians’ reports, becking need and functions of different areas in relation to all Ihers, the President prepared egislation which would open the nation's arteries, give us freelowing highways for the not-to-be stopped automotive in'ustry, which would lessen the resent hideousness of highway ^ath-—sudden, bloody and uneccscary slaughter on every

venue.

But who listened? Not Con:res?r They had more important usiness ba-ck home. Vacation ‘ime coming—y’ know. (And the lay when lawmakers are reuired to drive their own autoinbiles across country, that’ll e the day we get some fire uner the highway bills!) No. the highway program of he President lacked the personal irama of a white hospital bed, an oxygen tank, a cardiogram which might spell th* difference be-

'-Yveen life and death of a beloved world leader. Somehow we wern't able to visualize the magnitude of this enormous highway program. Too big, too involved, too expensive. A program of the nation’s heartstrings without the tug at personal heartstrings. Just not interesting to enough people who would write enough letters to enough Congressmen
