FAIRLY SPORES Commuters and Film Stars Mix Together By Margaret Latrobc One of my favor: e writers. Sloan Wilson, is on ton of the best-selling heap with “The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit.” The way you ran t *11 i s go : ! yam is that the movies are making it understandable. ? ready. And Gregory Peck about the most understandable choice imaginable, whether wearing pin stripe or gray flannel. Right? The tale centers briefly in the town cf Westpor*. Faiifield County, Connecticut, where the principals battle bravely with commuting trains nr 1 commuting emotions. (There is opportunity here for digression, but no space. So I wall restrain myself from saying there are mnny Westporta wuthin our town. Not all its citizenry are Madison Avenue flannelized characters. Not all are typical of anything
except just people. Not all of I them even drive Jaguars or 1930 fugitives from Detroit.) So what could be more natural j tlisn that the actual camera | shooting should occur smack on the Westport train platform of j the New York, New Haven and | Hartford-- with G. Peck person- ! ally running for his tra-in. waving bye-bye to his wife and snatching the morning newspaper just like it says in the book? And further, what could » be more to the point than that re^l- ' life wives abiding in Westport 1 should clog all exits, dashing ; headlong for autographs and , such from said movie hero? The I director said they were “coopera- | live" and awfully nice folk—but you could tell they were sort ot ie the way. Peck was cooperative, too. Instead of saying what he really thought, he confined his remarks to, “There seem to be a lot of feople with leisure time in/Westport.” (Gregory, honey, there’s plenty work to do here, same as anywhere—but somehow yo" make it seem ummportant!) I have nothing but contempt fc such public displays of ea^ beaver autographing nonsense
Seem? degrading to both the seeker and the giver. It happened, however, that this particular j mom was the occasion for my ! weekly visit with the ticket seli ler. We discuss urgent matters like what color will the new train schedule be? How is New Hav en prexy Pat McGinnis standing up under the protests of tmin hating customers? Why don't the conductors call each station so sleepy passengers don’t ride clear to Bridgeport? Et cetera. Since when does a mere movie-making interfere with important busii ness? And if Gregory insisted on signing the autograph album which somehow got into my purse—well, it would have been rude to decline, eh? Bees Win, 5941, Hawks Drop Tilt
Russellville and Roachdale j opened the high school basketball 1 season Tuesday night with the Russell Township Bees winning from Tangier, 59 to 41, and the Hawks droping their game to
Ladoga, 77 to 49. - Allgood led the Russellville attack over at Tangier, chalking ap 7 field goals and 6 free throws tor a total of 20 points. The Bees led all the way at 20-14, 34-17, 47-26 and 59 to 41. Roachdale invaded Ladoga but found the going pretty tough as the host team took over at the quarter, 19 to 12. and held a 3721 edge at halftime. Keck with 16 points was the bright light in the Hawk offensive.
