At this stage of the hand Mrs.’ Keen paused to check up. She had lost one trick and she still had two losing clubs and a losing diamond. Everybody had six cards left. Then rhe applied the knowledge j she had gained at trick two. Mr. Abel had started with seven diamonds. Therefore he had six cards in the other suits. JUST DIAMONDS But he had already played six cards in spades, hearts and clubs. So he must be down to nothing

be very bad for him.

At the eighth Dick Mrs. Keen led a diamond and presented Mr Abel with the lead. That was I loser No. 2. Mr. Abel led back a diamond and Mrs. Keen did not make the mistake of ruffing it in

dummy.

Instead she threw away one of dummy’s two remaining clubs. That was her third losing trick Now on the next diamond lead she ruffed in her hand and discarded the last elut) from the

She learned plenfy on this hand and it was fortunate that she did because she bid her head off to reach a questionable four-heant contract. In response to his partner’s overcall, Mr. Masters opened the ace of diamonds and Mr. Abel vigorously requested continuation of the suit by playing the ten spot. But Mr. Masters switched to the queen of clubs. That was odd. There was no apparent reason for the switch—unless Mr. Masters had no more diamonds to lead. That seemed to be the only answer and it meant that Mr. Abel had started with exactly seven diamonds. GOOD START Mrs. Keen won the second trick with the ace of clubs. She cashed two high hearts, picking up all of the opposing trumps. Then she led the king of spades and followed with a sma 1 !! spade to dummy s ace. A third spade was led and ruffed in the closed hand. Mr. Abel followed suit to all of these tricks.

Do you still BURY a dishrag to remove a wart on your finger? Perhaps not, but some do. Yes, even asafetida is still worn on a string about the neck to ward off illness. These cases are extreme, but surprisingly superstitious notions about disease and treatment are held in this enlightened age. Before you accept secondhand statements that hint of witchcraft, consult your physician. He alone is competent to evaluate methods of prevention and treatment of disease.
