YOU ASKED FOR IT!
I certainly don’t mean to imply there is anything wrong with reading good textbooks on the game. You can find out how to handle practically every type of hand. But there are times when there is no harm in using a little individual judgment. Take Mrs. Rhule’s hand today, for example. She had 14 points all right, but she didn’t have a good opening bid. I would recommend a pass on her holding. Six of her 14 points are made up of queens and two of those queens are completely unsupported. The queen of hearts has only slight support. Queens and jacks, unsupported by other honors and held in suit lengths of three cards or less, are treacherous values. ANEMIC OPENER Mrs. Rhule’s hand offered fine support of an opening bid by her partner, but it was anemic for an opening, except, possibly, at match point duplicate.

Against the final contract of three no trump Mr. Masters led the jack of Spades. Mr. Abel won with dummy’s queen and Mrs. F’usty played the deuce. A small diamond was led to the king and Mr. Masters won with the ace.
He noted that his partner played another deuce. Obviously there was no future in spades and diamonds and, since clubs looked hopeless, it appeared to be hearts or nothing. Mr. Masters returned a heart

and he was careful to lead the deuce, not the king. If he had led the king, dummy's holding would have stopped the suit. Mr. Abel played the 10 from dummy and Mrs. Fusty won with the jack. (If dummy had played small, Mrs. Fusty would have won with the eight.) She returned a low heart to Mr. Master’s king and a third heart lead through dummy’s queen made sure of five heart tricks and a two-trick set. POTENTIAL VALUE If Mrs. Rhule had passed as dealer Mr. Abel would have opened the bidding with one diamond. Now Mrs. Rhule, with the potential value of her lonesome queens much improved, could have shown her enthusiasm by a jump ! to two no trump. Shying away from no trumn, ; Mr. Abel wooild say three clubs I and a club raise from Mrs. | Rhule would almost surely result in reaching the cold game at that suit.
