V A 10 6 ♦ Q J 10 9 7 4 * A 9 5 The bidding: North East South West 1 * 1 A 2 4 Pass 3 ♦ Pass 5 A All Pass On the second round he disliked bidding his anemic heart suit and he couldn’t bid no trump with nothing in spades. He finally said three diamonds, in a small voice, and groaned inwardly when Mr. Muzzy went all the way to five. Mr. Meek won the first trick With the king of spades. He continued with the queen and Mr. Muzzy ruffed with the four of diamonds. The queen of diamonds was led and finessed. It won,‘but I it was bad news when Miss Brash showed out, discarding a small spade. Mr. Muzzy took time out to I count the diamonds and finally figured out that Mr. Meek had started with four—so there was no way to capture the king. PHILOSOPHY “Well, let’s get what we can, partner,” Mr. Muzzy remarked. At least we’re not doubled.’’ He led the seven of diamonds am,! finessed dummy’s eight. He took three rounds of clubs, ending .on the board. Then he led dummy’s last spade and ruffed it with the nine of diamonds. Next he cashed the ace and king of hearts and followed with a j third heart. Miss Brash winning with the queen. At this point everybody was j down to two cards. Miss Brash j had the ace and 10 of spades. Mr. Muzzy had the jack and 10 of diamonds. Mr. Meek held the king and six of diamonds and dummy had the lone ace of diamonds and the eight of hearts. PLAYS IT OUT Mr. Champion was dying a thousand deaths. He knew what the situation was and realized the hand could be made. He was afraid Mr. Muzzy was going to throw his cards in and concede that he was down one. But, for some unknown reason. Mr. Muzzy played it out. When Miss Brash led the ace of spades at trick 12, he played the 10 of diamonds—and Mr. Meek was fixed. He played the six of diamonds and Mr. Muzzy, looking very confused, did have presence of mind enough to discard the heart from dummy and win the last trick with the ace of diamonds, j If Mr. Meek had played the : king of diamonds at trick 12,

Mr. Muzzy could have killed it with dummy’s ace and won the last trick with his jack of diamonds. Whether he knew it or not, Mr. Muzzy had executed that rarest of all maneuvers, the smother play.
