FAIRLY SPOKEN

Forty As Life’s Peak

Need Not Be Depressing

By Margaret Latrobe

The years pass now like the ticking of a clock. You think, at 40, that somewhere along the line someone has made a quixotic mistake. Feeling still young as 20, you twist the lengthening steely record backward, downward—stop it here! Stop it now. Years are fine, giving balance, giving maturity—but now it’s enough. Stay the lengthening record which climbs and records, climbs and records, one more

year after another.

Forty is a good time to look at the view on both sides. It’s like sitting on a fence or a mountain top. Which may be why some people develop light heads from the high altitude. And if your face is turned backward to what used to be, if the fence is barbed wire or the mountain slope is icy—maybe a foot will slip or you’ll rip the jeans. Face forward, 40. There were same tall green trees growing on that upward climb. Some were

it was their nature. Some you walked around, others had to be uprooted from the path. A sad business, uprooting some part of (life which was appealing but un- ; trustworthy, beckoning yet de-

ceitful. Remember them all. and gladly; but look no more in the past. Rest on the fence or the mountain, breathe deep and long; but prepare for the rest of the journey. You want to go back the way you came? Impossible, my dear. Some have done it? Yes, but toward unreality. What was now becomes unreal, elusive, if you try to relive it. What is to be, over the mountain top is more real. Though it has yet to happen. Is this, then, the peak of living? After 40, is the trip only downhill? Not at all. Each slope of a mountain has different exposure, different winds and weather. And just look at those trees stretching out there—ahead. Millions of them, it seems. Say, lady—you happen to have a needle and thread? You were on the mountain, but I was on this barbed wire fence. Drat the luck!

WESTFIELD. N. J. Aug. 26 Patrolman Thomas A. Catalon has found that all the world does not love a policeman. He set up shop Tuesday on Mountain Avenue with an electronic control speed apparatus. Within minutes he nabbed tw > motorists for exceeding the speed limit. Thereafter, for two hours every car traveled at a sedate 25 miles an hour. Finally a grinning motorist brought a schoolboy printed sign which had been

placed out of Catalon’s sight. It read: "Slow. Cnp."

MRS. AGNES STREFF Is led by a friend from scene where her grandson, Richard Hamblen, 20, was shot and killed by Deputy Sheriff H. W. Trail in Los Angeles. Sent to arrest Hamblen for violation of three-year probation, Trail sought to spare Mrs. Streff by not handcuffing Hamblen. In a few seconds the six-foot, 200-pound Hamblen bolted. Trail futilely called “Halt!” three times and fired three warning bullets. Then he shot the youth. (International)
