Having played with Mr. Muzzy before, Miss Brash did not take this cheering remark too lyWhat was it that Mr. Muzzy liked so much about the dummy hand? It was the singleton club. He loves to ruff losers. It is his greatest pleasure tc find a singleton (a sneak, he calls it) in his hand and the dummy, too—so that he can crossruff. FIGURES LOSERS Here is the way he figured this hand—one spade loser, two diamond losers, period. He figured no club losers because dummy had a lone club and “some trumps.” The defenders took the first two tricks in diamonds and led a ’.bird diamond which Mr. Muzzy ruffed. He immediately laid down the ace of clubs and ruffed a small club with dummy’s trey of hearts. Now he led the last diamond off the board and ruffed it in his hand, Mr. Champion discarding a spade. Next another club was ruffed with the nine of hearts in dummy. A small spade was led to the 10 in the closed hand. Mr. Meek

“You oan relax, partner. Tm only going down one,” mimicked Mr. Champion. If Miss Brash had played this hand she surely would have realized that the chief function of dummy’s heart holding was to furnish an entry to the spade suit after trumps were out. She would have cashed the

ace and king of trump* and then led spades until the ace was knocked out. She could then have won any return and taken three rounds of trumps making sure to win the third round with dummy’s queen. Played this way the hand would have produced four spade tricks, five hearts and a club.
