GOSPEL of CHRIST ‘YOU HAVE HEARD TH&T iT WAS SAID../
In the sermon on the mount Jesus introduced things the people had always heard in religion, .md then gave them the things he would have them do. He said: “Ye have heard that it was said to them of old time. Thou shalt not kill. . . but I say unto you, that everv one who is angry with his brother shall be in danger of the judgement.” Matt. 5:21, 22. There are many other things that you have heard in religion which Jesus does not today approve, and w-e need to hear what he says unto us about them. You have heard it said: “One church is as good as another, and it docs not make any difference what church you join." But Jesus says: every plant which my heavenly Father planted not. shall be rooted up. Let them alone: they are blind guides. And if the blind guide the blind, .both shall fall into a pit.” Matt. 15:13, 14. Regardless of what “ye have heard" one church is not as good as another. The church that Jesus built is greater than any built by man. You have heard that baptism is not necessary to salvation, and that you can go to heaven without it. But Jesus said “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” John 3:5. Did anyone of greater authority than Jesus tell you that baptism is not necessary? You have heard that sinners could be saved just by praying to the Lord to save them. Jesus disproved this statement: “Now we know that God heareth not sinners.” John 9:31. Regardless of
what you have heard of men, you never heard God or his Son telling alien sinners to pray. You have heard it said that anything in the name of religion is alright as long as you believe you are right. But see what the scriptures teach in Rom. 16:17 and 34:23. You have heard a person can go to heaven outside the church. What does Jesus say? “The Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.” Acts 2:47. You have heard there are many churches in the world, and that it is too narrow to say that there is only one with divine approval. But Jesus said: “Other sheep I have which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice: and there shall be one fold, arid one shepherd.” John 10:16. You have heard the kingdon.of Christ is yet to be established in the future. But Jesus said: "Verily I say unto you. that there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of- death till they have seen the kingdom of Gcd come with power.” Mark 9:1. You have heard a person can be saved by faith alone, the very moment that he believes, but what does the Bible say? “And this, knowing the season, that already it is time for you to awake out of sleep, for now is salvation nearer to us than when we first believed.” Romans 13:11. R. V. “Ye see then, how that by works a man is justified and not by faith only.” James 2:24. Jesus, j-* ! of teaching that a pet-son is sawd the moment be believes, said: “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved.” Mark 16:16.
