Naughtily Alluring New English Stives By Margaret Latrobe Rest well. Iron Duke! England has triumphed. Even as Napoleon. Dior has had his Waterloo- this time at the hands of Norman Hartnell. dressmaker ta the Queen. Had Hartnell s recent “electrifying” collection been shown when Wellington was interested in bustles and battles, had word of the English sequinslinger filtered through the Channel to Empress MarieLouise, history might have been altered. For Bonaparte—instead of waiting in Belgium— might well have been waiting in Hartnell’s salon while his wife ordered some new clothes. Wow! “Dear, different, daring” Norman really slit the skirts this time. (But. Your Majesty — Somebody had to do something about that Dior fellow) Hartnell has up-to-now been the ultra conservative in politics of the pinking shears, content to sprinkle sequins on royal ball gowns, holding in check any impulse toward the flamboyant. The Hartnell summer collection, however, combined pale satins with dark rumors. “Naughtily alluring”' and “tubelike trumpets,” eh ? Crowning the show was an adaptation of a creation worn by Napoleon’s Polish mistress, Marie Walevvska. fTake it easy, Wellington—fashion experts may get around to some of the girls you liked.) Soon to be seen in Lunnontown are aqua satins ornamented with bunches of blue pearl graphs; black velvet bodices; lavender and old diamond necklaces laced with amethysts. I don’t know what effect this uninhibited haute couture will have on the Queen. Her street costumes have been becoming enough, but a bit on the dowdy side. (Pardon me, Ma’am, but the white shoes will have to go.) Princess Margaret and “bestdressed” Marina, Duchess of Kent, are probably delighted at Hartnell’s leap to chic. Though hardly approving of any dress Labelled “The Slink,”” their Fall wardrobes may yet be of “electrifying” design. Norman, really! Skip the blue grapes and let us have another look at that diamond neckpiece. Tally ho-hum and a jolly pip-pip to all. ,
