It s Blackwood On Bridge Eye On Wallet, Dale Bids Early Mr Dale believes that when the opponents have a pant score it is best to get in there with a bid early or you may not get in at all. Not and stay solvent, anyway. That is why he made a shaded opening bid on the anemic North cards in today’s deal. In this situation he likes to tell his partner early (and cheaply) that he has some values—as a basis for a possible sacrifice bid by his side later. North dealer. East-West vulnerable. East-West 60 part-
score.

ace in the closed hand won. The diamond finesse was taken and Mr. Muzzy won with the king and returned the king of clubs. FINESSES QUEEN Mr. Masters ruffed. Now he led to dummy’s jack of diamonds and cashed the ace of diamonds, discarding the trey of hearts from the hand. When both opponents followed to this trick, he led a small heart from the board and finessed the queen. Next he cashed the ace of hearts When Mr. Muzzy’s king dropped, it was clear that the heart suit would not set up and his last two hearts would have to be ruffed in dummy. Thanks to Mr. Muzzy’s double it appeared certain that the long enemy trump holding was in the East
hand.
WHY WORRY? No doubt Mr. Muzzy could overtrump the dummy, but what if he did? Mr. Masters could afford to lose two trump tricks - as long as he didn’t have to lose any hearts.
, Therefore after winning with the ace of hearts, he led the five of hearts and ruffed with dummys’ ten of spades. Mr. Muzzy overruffed with the jack of ^ spades and led another club. This was ruffed in the closet! Hand with the four of spades. Mr. Masters now led the six of hearts, his last one. and ruffed '.vilh the ace of spades on the board. Mr. Muzzy had three* •spades left at this point, but only one of them was higher than Mr. Masters’ queen-nine-eight.

He was a little perturbed when Mr. Masters’ strong bidding got the hand up to game in spades. But he needn’t have worried. Mr. Masters’ fine handling of the trump suit (and Mr. Muzzy’s helpful double) brought the contract home with ease. Mrs. Keen got off to the lead of the queen of clubs and the
