GOSPEL of CHRIST

HOW ARE PEOPLE M.*DZ BELIEVERS?

Wc must bo believers in God and ir Christ to escape eternal condemnation. (John 3:16; Heb. j F6.) HOW are people nude believers? There are two doctrines so diametrically opposed to each other that if e ther is right the other is wrong. One doctrine asserts that God makes believers by a direct operation of his power u on the sinner’s heart. The other affirms that God makes believers by exerting h s power through the inspired word, as given through Christ and the inspired writers. Which is correct? To whit authority may we appeal for settlement? Shall the case be referred to the man who says: “I know the time and place when the power of God came directly into my heart and made be a believer. I was not reading the Bible nor hearing the gospel, but I know that I was made a believer by the immediate power of God.” If this tvpe of testimony is accepted, then any other type of religion, however objectionable it mav .be. can be proved, for thev all have any number of witnesses of this kind. However, such witnesses care not what the B ble says, but will put their own •’experience" against anything that God his spoken. It is plain, therefore, that such testimony is not to be regarded at all. The Bible, and the Bible alone, is the supreme authority in the settlement of this and all other religious questions. and to it we must go. if we learn the truth in this matter. Please see Isaiah 8:20. The question is not: Does God make believers? We ail admit thit he does. Nor is the question: Does He make believers by the Holy Spirit? We will admit that he does that. too. Neither :s the question: Does He make believers by H:s power? All who accept the Bible

accept that The real question is: Does God make believers by a direct operation of His power upon the sinner’s heart, or does He exert that power through His inspired word, the Bible, and in that way make believers ? We submit herewith the testimony of the Scriptures. Ac’s 11:14: “Whi i Peter) shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.” Any theory that proposes to make believers and save men WITHOUT WORDS cannot be received, so long as we have regard for the Lord’s plan by which men are SAVED BY WORD3. Acts 15:7: “And when there had been much disputing. Peter rose up, and said unto them. Men and brethem, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe.” If it was God’s will that the Gentiles "should hear the word of the gospel, and believe,” then it was NOT His will that thev should believi WITHOUT THE WORD. John 17:20: “Neither pray I (Christ) for these alone, but for them also which shall .believe on me through their (apostles’) word.” The Lord praved that we would BELIEVE ON HIM THROUGH WORDS. John 20:30-31: “And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book: but these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through His name.” Why were these things written? That we might believe—this’'Lord’s plan for making belie . ers. “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing bv the word of God.” Rom. 10:17.

Korean Killed By Yank Guard

SEOUL. Korea. Aug. 12. (UP> —An American soldier shot and killed one Korean and wounded two others today in an incident expected to increase the violent demonstrations against Communist truce inspectors guarded

by U. S. troops.

The shooting occurred off Wolmi Island at Pusan where American military soldiers said the three Korean victims were trying to steal milk. But Korean . police described them as peaceful fishermen who were shot when the soldier began fir-

ing “wildly.”

Two thousand demonstrators, including 200 Chinese residents, milled through the downtown

streets of Seoul today demanding withdrawal of the Polish and Czech members of the truce inspection teams but no violence was reported. Communist newsmen at Panmunjom told United Nation? command reporters the neutral inspection teams would ignore n i Republic of Korea warning to leave Korea by midnight Saturday. Korea has accused the Poles and Czechs of spying fot the Communists. The rejection was expected to touch off another wave of wild rioting and American troops throughout Korea—charged by the U. N. command with protecting the neutral inspection teams—prepared for trouble. They already were under orders to shoot, if necessary.
