When Mr. Meek led the king of spades and the dummy went went down, Mr. Masters saw that he had to lose at least two spades and a- diamond. The problem was to avoid the loss of two diamonds. This would be easy’ if diamonds broke 3-3. But if they broke 4-2, Mr. Masters would have to try to ruff a diamond in dummy without getting it overruffed. KEY PLAY He won the first trick with dummy’s ace of spades. He cashed dummy's queen of hearts, which was the last trump lead he could make for the moment Now he shifted to a low diamond. Mr. Abel played the eight and Mr. Masters played low, as did Mr. Meek. This was the key play and a beautiful bit of timing, but Mr. Muzzy’ didn’t think so. Subtly, be made a wry face and held his nose. Mr. Abel came out with a spade and Mr. Meek cashed two tricks in that suit and returned a trump. Mr. Masters won with the king of hearts, led a diamond to dummy’s ace and returned dummy’s last diamond. LAST TRUMP When Mr. Abel did not ruff, he won with the king, led his last diamond and ruffed with dummy’s last trurhp. This was the situation he had hoped for. . . .that if one. opponent were short in diamonds, he would also be short in trumps. He got back to his hand by ruffing a club, picked up Mr. Meeks last trump and spread the hand. If he had taken as many as two rounds of trumps, early, the enemy could have led the last trump off the board when they were in with a diamond. And if he had led the ace, king and another diamond starting at trick three, Mr. Meek could have won the third round and led a fdurth diamond for Mr. Abel to ruff. “There was nothing to the hand,” said Mr. Muzzy, who fav-
ored the last line of play men- way," defend'd Ve*. ''Tb* tioned above. “You sure played only difference t you’d it the hard way. Masters.^ have ended up with just nine “You’d have played it the easy’ tricks.”
