tricks, making its future course uncertain. In Massachusetts, a 70-man crew raced against time to finish erecting a crucial third 200foot leg of a huge steel island being built off Cape Cod as a defense radar post. A spokesman said the island, called a Texas tower, might “end up in Nova Scottia somewhere" if the hurricane struck before the job was completed. Red and black hurricane flag.= went up from Cape Lookout, N. C., to the Virginia Capes and northeast storm w-amings from Savannah, Ga., to Block Island,

FAIRLY SPOKEN Leggy’ Ladies In Shorts And Newspaper Editors By Margaret Latrobe To go through & summer without community protests on the length of ladies’ shorts, and colums to wit, w’ould be lunacy. The vigilantes of law’ and order have already had their tape measures out, trying to decide whether to lock up the girls or let ’em get that extra inch of sunjtan. Even the august and

venerable House of Representatives, not yet unmindful of what makes news, has gone on record anent girls’ britches. These gentlemen, however, strongly favor legs in plain view. The House rules have been rescinded, reversing a previous ban on barelegged babes in the balcony. Whether on beach, boulevard or balcony, the brief pantaloon department poses a noxious question. And my plea is—not for propriety, not for peace of mind amongst constabulary or lawmakers—but for a group of public servants little known, misunderstood and unapprecierted. I beg for mercy, girls, for the newspaper editors. These shy, erudite, soft-spoken and inhibited gentlemen simply shudder at the sight of feminine limbs parading through the pages of their

papers. Although their sweet and circumspect natures are repelled by immodest shorts adorning the feminine form, they are helpless to prevent leggy photographs. Against the sternest admonitions of which editors are capable (real gentle), staff photograph.’rs come trooping in at press time—with w’hat? Girls. Legs. Cheesecake. Actresses just arriving or just going—all legs. And the dames who aren’t going any place are going in shorts. No—there’s no law against legs, except in certain remote

area. Hke White Plains. N. Y. There's no hard-and-fast rule of etiquette forbidding Mamma to head for the grocery store or cinema, clad in pants ending far above the knee. It is up to us to ask ourselves the triple-mirrored question—On me, how’ good do shorts look ? I love law and order and the upholders thereof. But these are hardy-type citizens, accustomed to gritting their teeth, holding

tape measure and temper in check at female vicissitudes. But more than they do I love newspaper editors—whose timid, tender natures leave them unprotected and unnerved, shocked by shorts. You’ll never hear a word of protest from them, understand. Much too shy for that But think it over, girls. Let out the hem* in the Bermudas these editttfy can’t stand much more.
