trumps was laid down and then Mr. Dale entered his hand with the queen of diamonds. For the next trump lead from the South hand there is a strong inclina tion to play the jack, to make sure of driving out either the king or the queen. To make the hand, this impulse had to be submerged and Mr. Dale was successful in that respect. He made the key play at trick four—-a small trump, Mr. Abel played the eight, a club was discarded from dummy and Mrs. Keen won with her lone queen. SPREADS HAND The spade return was won with the ace in the closed hand and the jack of hearts was led, driving out the king. The jack of spades won the third trick for the defenders but that was all. Mr. Dale ruffed the next spade lead picked up Mr. Abel’s last trump and spread the hand. If Mr. Dale had led the jack of hearts on the second lead of the suit Mrs. Keen's queen would have won and then Mr. Abel would have held the king-nine over Mr. Dale’s ten-seven-two more sure winners. The reasoning on the actual play of the heart suit was as follows: If the opposing hearts were divided 3-3, there was no problem. Only two tricks would be lost in the suit regardless of which heart was led on the second round.
