“What do you mean?” asked Mr. Muzzy. “We couldn’t beat it with a crow-bar.” Of course, Mr. Muzzy was wrong as usual. Against good defense Miss Brash had no play for the hand. Do you see why? Mr. Dale was in a reminiscent mood. “The simplest way is the best way,” he said to no one in particular. “In the old days, if your partner led an ace and you had K 10 2 and played the 10, you could be reasonably sure partner would continue the suit. But not any more. “Today, if you give your partner a come-on signal in a suit, he reads some deep, dark, mys■erious meaning into it. Your real meaning, child-like in its simplicity, is lost in a maze of complicated conventions.” HIGH SPADE Here is what brought this on: Mr. Muzzy opened the king of spades against the heart slam. Now Mr. Dale saw that, unless Miss Brash had the almost impossible holding of a singleton spade herself, a high spade continuation at trick two would beat the contract. Dummy would have to ruff and that would leave only one trump on the board to lead through Mr. Dale's twice-guarded king of

hearts.

So at trick one Mr. Dale played his highest spade, the 10. “Let’s see that trick,” said Mr. Muzzy. Delighted that his play had been noticed at all. Mr. Dale {faced the cards. “Which card did you play, j partner?” Mr. Muzzy asked. “The 10,” answered Mr. Dale

happily.

MUZZY SWITCHES No Idir.g knowingly, Mr. I#uzzy l proudly switched to a diamond, i Thus Miss Brash w-as enabled to ; take two heart finesses and made

her bid.

How did Mr. Muzzy get the j idea that the 10 of spades called for a diamond switch? Well, he | has been studying about suit preference signals. He thought !rhe 10 of spades asked for the lead of the higher of the other two plain suits. That’s the convention. all right, but it applies only when it is very clear that the continuation of the first suit cannot gain.

DESIGN C-339. This is a small house, and the rooms are of medium size, but it has three bedrooms, a bath, an excellent kitchendinette combination and a roomy living room. There are brick planters beneath the window and at the entiance. The floor area of this house is 998 square feet and cubage is 18,962 cubic feet.
