fAlRLV SPOKEN Modern Wife Bewails Husband Playing Chef By Margaret Latrobe As we know, the pioneer women had a good many problems. One thing, however, she was spared—the amateur chef, the man in the kitchen. In those days, men worked from sun to sun and definitely did not demand to cook a rabbit stew after a hard week at the office. Men killed the squirrels, and left the scasening of same to the little woman. And frankly I don't know yet whether or not trading in Daniel Boone and his coonskin cap for the modem version in a pl&id apron and cook’s bonnet can be called progress. If men want to broil hamburgers on an open fire in the backyard. toss up a salad now and
then, or rouse some fruit in a blend of kirsch and bitters—such episodic feats are tolerable. But when they humiliate us by getting their mits into a bowl of biscuit dough or braiding Italian loaves of bread, then I say Girls, it’s time to organize. It's time to band together and regain territory lost to husbands disguised as Escoffier. Most husbands (bless their hearts) feel about cooking the way bachelor uncles feel about children. Enjoyable enough, hut the minute the work starts they are gone as if by magic. “Dear, could you step in here a minute?” The sink is full of abused crockery, the floor embedded with extraneous peels, the last spoonr ncased in congealing egg yolk. .And where will Papa turn, except in your general direction? Like I said, the bread thing is carrying coexistence en cuisine beyond the common sense level. Right at the corner, bread can be bought for pennies, neatly wrapped and sliced. Why should a man spend his weekends in a cloud of flour, sugar and yeast? Planning to bake batches in triplicate, and freeze them ? “This recipe is the McCoy,” says he, flipping bits of dough into the air. “Got it from an inn (they charge for these recipes, of course) where they make all their bread, pizzas, doughnuts. And all you do, you take a large j wooden howl (seven dollars, it was) and when the dough rises a few hours in a warm spot (where the house plants normally repose) it’s ready for the oven.” Men engaged in such pursuits usually acquire admiring male apprentices, eager to learn secrets of bread-baking. And these Peeping Toms spend hours opening the stove to see how fat and bountiful, how brown and shining bakes the staff of life within. At 375 degrees. “But dear—it’s supposed to be wet in the middle, crisp on the outside. Terrific, ain’t it?” Da-vee! Davy Crockett—take back the dishwasher, ,the wash-
ing machine, the percolator. Bring back the pioneer hardships, the days when a woman’s place was in the home and she could still get in it.
Give me that wood stove, that f : replace oven. I'll knead the dough, bake the bread -if Pop will whittle sticks on the porch and let me hack in the kitchen.
