Mrs. Alice Stites Honored With Dinner Mr. and Mrs. William Stites, Greencastle, R. 1, entertained Sunday, March 6. \\ r ith a pitch-in dinner in honor of the 72nd birthday of Mr. Stites’ mother, Mrs. Alice Stites. Forty friends and iclatix’cs enjoyed the delicious dinner and visiting with one ani thcr. Many pictures were tak:i of the four generations present. Mrs. Stites received many nice gifts. Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Stites and family, Sandy Cole. Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Glol, Mrs. Jean St.4>d?, Mrs. Dorothy J. Duke, Susan J. Duke, James M. Strode, Mrs. Nellie Parrish, Albert Nahmias, Mary Stites. Bob Smith, all of Indiani( mititim-il on I'iisfe Six)
of his opponents was voici in hearts, the knowledge that Miss Biash’s bids don’t always mean \x hat they say and the fact that Mr. Masters is a flawless dummy player. Miss Brash led the queen of hearts and Mr. Masters decided to ruff in dummy. But before doing so, he looked ahead in tile play. If he ruffed with dummy’s six of spades how xvould he get back to j his hand to extract the opponents’ ! t : umps? By overtaking the king of spades with the ace ? That would he all right if one opponent didn’t have four spades to the ten. By cashing the king of spades and then leading a diamond toward his king? Maybe, but there was a very good chance that one of tne defenders vrould-ruff a second round of diamonds. THE DEC ISION Finally Mr. Masters used Mr. Abel’s double to^ advantage in leaching his decision. On the bidding it xvas quite likely that Mr. Abel had the longer spade holding. There Was a play to make lhe contract even if he held four spades to the ten. Air. Masters had used that play. He made an unblocking play at the first trick. He ruffed with dummy’s king of spades. Next he | led the six of spades from the board and put in the nine. When ' this held he pulled trumps and had one left after Air. Abel xvas out. Now he went to xx-ork on diamonds. Air. Abel waited until the fourth round of the suit before taking his ace. Then he cashed the ace of hearts—but that was all for the defense. Air. Alasters xxon the heart continuation, went to dummy with the ace of clubs and parked his losing club on the fifth diamond.
