President Eisenhower recently launched the nation-wide ‘‘Share Our Surplus Program” of the National Council of Churches. Under this three-year program millions of pounds of surplus foods will be distributed free to the needy of over forty foreign lands. One dollar will pay distribution costs for $20 worth of foods. It is expected that members of 35 major Protestant denominations will help distribute 500 million pounds of surplus foods for which at least $7,500.U00 will be needed. Executive groups of the Congregational Christian Chuiches and the Evangelical and Reformed Church have approved merging the two denominations into the United Church of Christ. The joint session set 1957 as the date for forming the new body which is expected to have a membership of more than two million. The Congregational Christian group has 1.250,000 members in | 5,573 churches, and the Evangelical and Reformed has 760,850 in
2.735 churches.
Dr. Albert Schweitzer. AlsaceLorraine missionary to Africa, is believed to be the first Protestant missionary to have a special set of commemoraave postage stamps issued in his honor. The four stamps to be issued by the Principality of Monaco will include: a two-franc stamp shoving the landing stage at Lambarene, site of Dr. Schweitzer’s mission station; a five-franc stamp with a portrait of the doctor against a background of tropical plants and animals; :> fifteen-franc stamp picturing the hospital: and a 209-franc airmail stamp with a medallion portrait of the doctor. Some 7.000 bottles tosseo about on the waves of the Atlantic last year with gospel messages sealed in them. The bottles were set afloat by members of the Christian Endeavor Union of Northern Ireland.
