What

would

you play

on the

second tr ick ? Would you play the king or the nine—or doesn’t it make any difference? I’ll answer the last part of the question for you- it definitely does make a difference. See if you can figure it out as Mr. Masters did, before

reading on.

First Mr. Masters was practically certain the opening lead

king of diamonds was going to be ruffed out. so that, in effect, he would lose three diamond

tricks.

COl’LD FINESSE That wouldn't be fatal. He could still take a finesse against the king of spades and if that worked he would make his con-

tract.

But Mr. Masters doesn’t like to depend on a finesse when a better play is available. He found one. He saw that all he had to do was to prevent Mr. Dale from gaining the lead prematurely for r iend through dummy’s spades. > To accomplish this lie ducked the second di-mond lead, playing the ! nine, while Mr. Dale discarded a j small spade. Mr. Abel came on with the jack of diamonds and the king was ruffed out by Mr. Dale. On ’lie expected spade return, Mr. .Masters lost no time in going up with dummy’s ace. FOURTH DIAMOND He then lead a fourth diamond. Mr. Abel played his now singleton ten spot, and the ace of trumps went on from the closed hand. This was a little high for Mr. Dale and he dropped a small

club.

Now the remaining enemy trumps were picked up and Mr. Masters placed his losing spade on the good eight of diamonds in dummy. If he had played the king of diamonds at trick two he would have lost the hand. Mr. New, the avid kibitzei who plays a whale cr* a game from the sidelines, had a. com-

’’Nice play. Masters,” he said, "but Dale could have beaten you if he had ruffed the second diamond and led a spade. You would have had to take the spade finesse and Abel would have won and led another diamond for Dale

to ruff.”

•‘You're wrong, .son,” replied Mr. Dale with a slight edge to his voice. “If I ruffed the sec- . ond diamond and lead a spade. I Masters goes up with the ace, picks up trumps and concedes a spade trick. Incidentally, whj* don't you get in the game some- J time? We could g.ve you a little uh—seasoning.”

Wedding Anniversary Gift Lists Revised By Margaret I At robe Much as I like jewelers I never j realized what foxy fellows they were until this year’s Almanac called my attention to the fact that they revised the gift list of wedding anniversaries a few years ago. Until this happy change occurred. it was hardly worth even being married at all unless you could stick it out for 60 years and get yourself into the diamond category. But this is different now— diamonds are man-

to enjoy them. The traditional list “recommended by social authorities” (not the jewelry associations) .suggested celebrating wedlock thus: Ist-paper. 2nd-cotton. 3rdleathcr. 4th-fruit and flowers, silk. 5th-wooden. 6th-sugar and candy, iron. 7th-woolen err copper. You can easily see that witli such piffling presents, we were getting nowhere. It took the traditionalists 25 years to get to the pay dirt, with silver at the 25th, pearl for the 30th; ruby for the 40th and gold for the half century.

senses and revised the list, marriage has been a lot more worthwhile. Well before your 20th anniversary you are assured of such items as china, clocks, crystal, silver, diamonds, fashioned accessories, pearls, furs, gold, platinum. It still takes 35 to 40 years to reach the jade and ruby class. Emeralds don’t arrive until yoni and Pop have been cooing a’ each other 55 years. (And some of us married late, at that.) The point is that the jewelry associations have done us ladie a big favor and should be thanked for their efforts. If it looks a touch mercenary, just recall

that they too have wives. They also must remember anniversaries, even though they can do it wholesale. What I’m wondering is this. Have they thought of a way to remind husbands when the gold charm bangles, pen and pencil sets are to be gift-wrapped? Have they perfected an alarm clock which rings madly once a year, warning Pop to get out his check-book? Or do they simply depend on wives to stimulate remembrance ? Our fifteenth happy year is coming up this Summer. Watches, it says hero, is the most acceptable gift. Does that mean I have to give him one, or do 1 get them both?
