YOUR COUNTY AGENT COMMENTS By Kenneth Harris We are listing as a part of our fust farm page of the spring season the 1955 4-H Club Calendar of dates. Of course there may necessarily be a few changes of dates as the year goes on, but by and large most of these dates are fixed. It might be convenient to clip this calendar for future reference.

The 4-H Club program is only part of the over-all extension program for Putnam County. The various project groups and cooperative organizations met last week and approved a complete plan of work for the year. In this plan is the set-up for the new Better Farming and Better Living program that is being inaugurated this year in addition to the various agriculture and home economics project activities that have been carried on over the years. A limited supply of these plans of work are available in the extension office for those who would be interested in having one. Within the next week ot two we will attempt to list a calendar of dates of general interest to Putnam County folks.

<nana farmers, he asserts, to check the moisture content of their bins. Weed content of soybean fields was higher than usual in 1954. Following the wet weather of early November, moisture of beans in the field was often higher than earlier in the fall. In fact, during the late combining season moisture ranked to 18 percent or higher. Ordinarily the cool weather that prevails in late November and subsequently, permits safe storage of soybeans carrying more than 14 percent moisture until spring. The Indian Summer weather that developed in late November, however, has doubtlessly contributed to the heating of wet beans in the late fall and resulted in a drop in germination. This is usually tied up with high moisture content of beans during warm spring weather. Samples, taken from bins in December, have showm as high as 20 percent moisture and such beans not only fail to grow but are rotten. Late harvested soybeans are showing many rotten seed in the germinators. Out of

Soybeans are “acting up’’ again this year according to tests made by the seed certification service at Purdue University. Out of over 500 soybean seed samples already germinated, 30 percent have fallen below the 80 percent minimum requirement for good seed. Ten percent of the 300 samples are germinating less than 70 percent. In many cases, low germination can be traced to samples that are above 14 percent moisture, according to Charles Coons, certification manager. This is a warning to In-

these observations comes the warning by Purdue agronomists to all farmers to know the moisture content of their stored soybeans. Deep and representative probing is important and farmers should remember that the driest spots at this time of the year are around the walls, and the wettest spots are in the surface center of the bins. Soybeans carrying too much moisture grade lower on the market, and may even go out of condition for milling purposes. A1 Carter of the State Seed Laboratory at Purdue urges farmers not to delay in getting in seed samples for germination through the State Laboratory. Later in the season the rush of germination wa>rk delays the time when germinations can be made. While the supply of seed plant the Hoosier crop appears of superior soybean varieties to to be adequate and the usual amount of certified seed wall be available yet it is important that testing both moisture and germination be more 'extensively practiced this year than ever.

Sheep Pregnancy Is Critical Period

Sheep raisers need to guard against the development of pregnancy disease or ketosis in pregnant ewes at this time of year. Many ew r es are now in the last i month of pregnancy which is the most critical period^ Affected ewes may fail to eat with the rest of the flock, and become listless and dull. These symptoms wall progress until the ewes show a staggering gait, stand with their 1 heads dowm and show extreme weakness. They eventually become unable to rise, and wall usually die, prior to lambing without showing any temperature or other evidence of infection. Once the condition de-

velops it will usually affect more than one ew r e and may involve as much as 25 percent of the flock. The exact cause of ketosis is not known. It is known that ewes carrying two or more lambs are mere susceptible, and fat ewes seem to be more susceptible tlian thin ewes which indicates that level of feeding during the pregnancy period may determine

the incidence of ketosis.

Nutritional requirements of prjegriant ewes increase very rapidly during the last month of pregnancy, because the fetus makes its greatest growth during this period. Once the condition progresses tJo advanced stages it is almost impossible to cure; therefore alertness on the part of the flock owmer to recognize early symptoms is import- , ant. Ewes in advanced stages can | be kept alive by drenching molas- t ses thinned with warm water, I

but this will not be successful un- MARCH less the ew r e is close to lambing. MARCH

After lambing ewes usually recover quickly from the condi-

tion.

Prevention seems to be the best bet. Ew r es in the last month of pregnancy should receive from one-half to one pound of grain

made up largely of shelled corn or other high energy feed. They should also receive a balanced ration as far as protein, minerals, and vitamins are concerned, especially if the quality of hay or other roughage is low. Exercise is also considered a good preventativ.e It is important to keep the ewes gaining slightly in weight during this period and the amount of gram fed will depend | c upon the condition of the ewei
