Mrs. Keen's queen. The diamond return was ducked by Mr. Abel but he had to win the next diamond with his king. Desperately he laid down the ace and king of spades, hoping lor a miracle. But no miracle happened. So he took his eight tricks and gave up, for down
one.
He didn't even try to throw Mrs. Keen in with a second round of hearts, hoping shd" would have to lead clubs to him. As you see that wouldn’t have worked anyway. RIGHT THERE Don't think Mr. Champion wasn't right in there with one of his longer and more repetitious lectures. All Mr. Abel needed to do was to make sure of winning four club tricks. This he could have done easily by leading his four of clubs at trick two. The nine of clubs on the board would either win the trick or it would force out the jack, making the other four clubs in the closed hand good. Absolutely right. But Mr. Champion's lecture had no effect on the score recorded for this hand. It was still put down as 50 points for the opposition.
