The scarcity of Christian literature for overseas Chinese communities in Taiwan. Malaya. Singapore, Thailand. Burma, the Philippines, Boineo, Indonesia Canada, and the United States, is being met by the printing and distribution of Christian literature carried on by Council of Christian Literature for Overseas Chinese. By the end of June 1953. the council reports. 267.500 books had been printed and 67,212 sold. These include hymn books, Bible study helps, children’s Bible story books, and devotional literature. The council, an interdenominational body whose headquarters are in Hongkong, receives support from Christian groups in Hongkong. England. Canada, New Zealand, and the United States. Unless the Jews of America restore the synagogue and its worship service to their place as the main center of the faith, and unless they make its religious, values more important than present emphasis on "good works” through charities and philanthropies, both Jews and Judaism will perish in the U. S. A., rabbis warned their parishioners when the Synagogue Council of America met in New York recently. The Council represents all branches of the Jewish faith—orthodox, reform, and conservative. Rabbi Julius Alark, of Temple Emanu-El spoke the sentiment of most rabbis and lay leaders when he said: “Other organizations philanthropic, fraternal. defense, goodwill, which for the most part grew ou? of thc synagogue ami with which the synagogue has no quarrel—have arisen to comnete with the synagogue for Jewish loyalty.
