| There's A Time To Refuse I To Cash A Sure Winner You have to make strangeI looking plays to defend successj fully against a squeeze. Mr. Dale put up the queen, and it lost to the king. Mr. Abel tried the club finesse and it lost to the king. Mr. Dale led back a diamond ,and tlie nine was won , by Mr. Masters with the ten. j He cashed the ace of diamonds. J and everybody followed. The j sight was obviously good, and it , appears that the natural play at this point is to cash that card I ind lead the king of hearts. Mr. Masters was good enough ; to see that this line of play would leave him in a hopeless position. Undoubtedly Miss Brash would I win with the ace of hearts and cash three clubs. What would j be discard on the last two clubs? He could safely drop the eight of | hearts, but on the last club he ' would have the choice of parting i with the queen of hearts, making dummy’s jack good; or a spade, \
which would enable declarer to run four spade tricks. Mr. Masters decided to shift to a club and to save his good diamond as a safe discard later in
the play.
Able Must Be Set This was the killing defense. Mr. Abel won the club and cashed two more clubs. On the last two clubs Mr. Masters dropped the eight of hearts and the good diamond. Now there was no way for Mr. Abel to win nine tricks. He got three clubs, a diamond, a heart and three spades ,one short of his contract.
Unless you can cash the setting trick, be careful in cashing winners on the defense. You may he doing exactly what declarer wants you to do.

Plane Flight Thrills 1 Like Nothing Else Bv Margaret Latrube
When someone says ’T've j never been in a plane. . .” my heart aches for the beauty, the splendor, even the occasional queasy stomachs they have missed. Which doesn't imply any prejudice against trains, busses or boats—they are fine, too. It's just that flight is like nothing else in this world. It is an experience to seek, nut to be missed. The most pei-fect flight, visually, begins on a field sprinkled with rain; with gray heavy clouds hanging low enough to be
overcast but high enough so the visibility isn't nil. Lousy weather agitmnd gives the passenger a greater chance to feel useful, as he ‘'helps" the pilot get the big ship into the air. After the motors reach their pitch of intensity and the great silver bird leaves the runway, there is a few minutes amidst the clouds. Maybe you can see the wing-tips, maybe not. This is a* good time to light the cigarette, ask for hot coffee and open a book. But the book is never read. V/ithin seconds you have emerged from the woolen vapors and I your journey has reached half- ! way to Heaven. The clouds lie be!ow now in a mass of ruffled cotton. Whatever colors were mixed for earthly sunsets are intensified in tlie pastel dream world above the shadowy fleece below. To one side, deep against the horizon.
are four giant wings of rosy coral. A distant escort without swiftness. And if the cloudland shapes itself into vast cities, valleys. mountains receding into the slate blue yonder—who is to sa\ what may be really there ? And the night flight? Choose clear moonlight. Fly as far as you can. even if it means looking up a fourth-removed cousin 2.000 miles from home. Because once you look upon the black velvet earth, lit with a million sparkling jewels, you will wish to stay up there forever. Who could possibly sleep on a night flight ? When the enchanting circles, avenues, piers, and long, long trails are lighted in a never-ending pattern across the continental jewel box beneath? Rough flights? I love 'em. Let the coffee slosh upward fromi Is cup. Let creamed chicken, steak and peas splash from one
end of the plane to the other. Let the huge bird swoop, rise and fall in restless wind currents. I brush up on my prayers, brush off my skirt and excitedly, delightedly, tighten the seat belt. It makes me feel close to the Almighty to he bobbing about in His territory. Daylight or darkness, fair •leather or foul I love to fly! FERN Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hoiber entertained with a New Year's Day dinner Saturday. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Shaughnessy of Clarkshill; Mr. ..nd Mrs. Don Heber and dawgliters, Vivian Mae, and Ruth Ann; Miss Jane Burks and Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Stoner.
